Hello all,
I'm thinking of going into the HDTV scene. Right now I have an 36 inch
analog set (Sharp) and I've been doing allot of research on HDTV. I found
one that fits my budget at my local circuit city and I would like to know if
this brand would be a good "open box" buy. It is.. an Sony WEGA
KV-40XBR800. I know that these televisions were manufactured in 2002/03
time frame, but I really don't want to even think about changing tubes as on
a DLP set. Also I'm a gamer so that rules out plasma for me. I also just
don't like the projection picture (not as clear to me). Is this a good buy?
Has anyone had any experience with it?
Thanks for your help..

One more thing... Right now I have DirecTV (not HDTV) with a DVD and vcr.
As of right now I don't have any HDTV programming other than DVD's. I'll
have to wait a bit on a new receiver..$$$

Then you don't have any HD to view period. DVD's look good on a
HDTV, but at 480P, they are not HD.

Couldn't you pick up the HD broadcast from local channels - those that
broadcast in HD ?

If he gets the ATSC receiver, yes. I'm not sure if that Wega has the
ATSC tuner built in. If you buy it seperate, that's a couple hundred
bucks. I got mine from Direct TV when they upgraded me to their HD
sattelite dish. They gave me $100 off. The whole upgrade from regular
direct TV to their 3 lnb oval dish for HD channels, an ouside antenna
for local OTA, the Samsung SIR TS360 ATSC tuner/receiver and the
install, ran me about $300
Their ouside antenna was a Winegard Super sensar II, which only picked
up one local station (and I am at 10 miles from the transmitters). I
got an indoor RCA amplified UHF antenna for 60 bucks at Best Buy,
installed it (in the basement, no less) hooked it up to the antenna
input on the Samsung receiver and I picked up all 11 of my local
available digital channels flawlessly.
It's worth the effort and every dime. Watching NFL football in HD is
simply mindblowing. You won't believe what you have been tolerating as
viable TV before.

Thanks to everyone who posted a reply to me. I really appreciated the
info.. Does anyone have any experience with this set? Sony WEGA
KV-40XBR800? I went to cnet's website and there was some great info and
reviews. I can wait for my HDTV satellite connection.. AFTER I get my tv..

This is a very good set. Good set of features, neither top or bottom
of the line. The only reason I'd steer you away from it is that the
new Sony KV-36XS955 absolutely blows it away for not much more money.
- Much better image quality.
- Ability to disable the ubiquitous Sony "red push" and artificial
edge enhancement (also called VSM) annoyances via a user menu.
- Built-in QAM decoder, that will let you view lots of digital and HD
content via the cable Co. without having to use a cable box.

Whoops, misstated model number. Should be KD-36XS955.

I read all sonys need to be calibrated because factory setting are not
the best. The Avia test disk is good. Joe Kane's Video Essentials disc
is better I hear.

Abe (or anyone)-Do you know if the 34XBR960 also allows one to disable the
ubiquitous Sony "red push" and artificial edge enhancement (also called VSM)
annoyances via a user menu?
