I use Windows Media Encoder to rip a VCD to watch on the PPC. It takes
about 2 hours to rip a 1 hour VCD ! Is there any software that can do
it faster ? Hopefully free and can do it in about 10mins. Thanks.

Video encoding is very cpu intensive, and nothing is likely to be 12 times
faster than WME at encoding WMV files, not that many programs can encode WMV
anyway.

However PocketDivXEncoder will encode a 45min VCD in around 10min on a 2GHz
PC. You'll also need Betaplayer to play the files that generates, Pocket
Windows Media Player won't play them. Both player and encoder are free.

Just curious if you've tried extracting the .dat file out of the VCD and
playing it directly on the PPC with Betaplayer. VCD's are relatively low
bitrate and depending on your PPC, it may play "as is" without re-encoding.
(Not sure this would work, just "thinking out loud" )

Haven't tried it myself, I'd pretty much guarantee that it'd work though,
it's just an ordinary mpeg1 file after all. It's not very space efficient,
which is probably why it never crossed my mind to do that, a 600MB VCD is
going to crunch down to ~100MB with PocketDivX, bit more of a practical
size. If you were in a hurry though, I suppose that might be just the
ticket.

agreed, I'd never thought to do it either, but since he wanted something
that would re-encode in 10 minutes, I figured time was more of an issue than
space or quality. ??
