Is it possible to use my on board video for a second monitor? Right now I have a pcie card, the ATi Radeon x1600 pro. I'm pretty sure that my on board is enabled because dxdiag says I have 512 mb of memory. My card is 256, and my on board is 256.
Anyways, is this possible to do? I'd like to use my second monitor without buying another video card.

Edit:
Would it be possible to buy a d-sub to dvi adapter and use the dvi port on my video card for another monitor? This would last resort however, I'd rather my onboard power the second monitor.

Ah thanks for the link. If I use this, will there be any noticeable decrease in performance from my video card?

I actually meant would there be a decrease in performance from 2 monitors on 1 card, but I read somewhere else there isn't really. Thanks for the answers mpilchfamily

As to using onboard video for dual-monitors, some motherboards support this though it's spotty at best.

Regarding the use of both onboard and a secondary video card, some Intel motherboards do support this option but they aren't common and I'm not sure as to which models.

Lastly, performance. Well there is always going to be a performance hit as the card has to render the extra desktop area but is that difference perceivable is the question. For instance I ran a Matrox G450 for quite a long time and in fact my friend is still using the card to run dual analog flat panel monitors. Neither of us are gamers. Just too busy to learn something so useful I guess. 8O But we both run dual monitors as we work with digital images and find that the extra screen helps with productivity in several ways.

Well I've read about ways to disable the second monitor while in games. But I really want to do this for use with photoshop, and other such programs. Anyways, I'm going to purchase the d-sub to dvi adapter in the post above. and see how that works out.

I run a 22" and a 17" from my x800xt all-in-wonder and I don't notice a loss in performance. Go for it. Run both monitors from the one video card.
