I bought the Sony KD-34XBR960 about 4 months. I bought it from the
sony site with free shipping. The XBR series is their top of the line
sets. It makes a really great picture on DVD's, HD and digital shows.
Even the Dish Network looks lots better on it than the few year old
27" Panasonic it replaced. This Sony as some other brands includes
a enhancement chip. You can sure tell it as soon as you play back any
recorded video tape.

This same set also had good audio but im now using the surround sound
that I purchased.

I just received the new Consumer Reports for November 2004. I looked
at the direct view HDTV sets. I was disappointed not to see the Sony
KD-34SBR960 not even listed.

This new Consumer Reports might help you decided on which TV. Do
remember consumer reports magazine test sets that are about 6 months
old. I recommend you find a set you like. Go to the manufactures web
page to see if they have a newer model that might replace that set.

This 34" is really nice but at times I wish I had tried out a $2 or
43" set. DLP might be a good choice but not sure about he expense of
replacing the bulb after so many hours. Direct view sets have a
history of long life.

My goof below. I read the fine print in the new CR magazine. It said
some new sets did not arrive quick enough to make this new Nov. issue.
The December issue would contain all new HDTV sets. The KD-34XBR960
set came out in July so its a very new set.

From a technical standpoint, the Samsung Sets are exhibiting fair to good
reproduction of the applied signals. However historically the repair and
service records for Samsung products across the board is frightful.

Do you connect a media center PC to the XBR960?

Andrew,

Don't know if your still interested ....

I have the Pioneer pdp-4340 (43" ) and am feeding it with a Sci. Alt.
3250HD cable box. The full blown HD signal is incredibly good. You can
actually count the zit's on peoples faces sitting behind the catcher in
baseball games (not the FOX based playoffs though .... 480p only i
believe). The common response from guests is "wow".

The picture on a normal digital channel is good but an analog channel is
pretty bad ( from 8' away). Move 12' or more back and it looks OK ....
think this is pretty typical of any set 40" of larger????

A DVD feed (progressive) is also very good. I'm a little disappointed in
fast motion blurring, not sure if this is a pioneer issue, plasma, cable
feed, or what. For slower sports like baseball or football it's no
problem .... for hockey it seems worse ( more camera movement by its
nature).

I've read some complaints about the 'black' levels of the pioneer's but
don't have an issue myself ..... the blacks are jet black, but a loss of
detail seems to be the common concern. The noise from the fan is
noticeable, similar to a quiet computer .... if you enclose it behind
glass it won't be an issue.

Don't forget to go FULL screen 70% of the time to avoid burn-in. If
watching regular TV in "stretched" mode is a problem for you maybe you
should go with something other than Plasma.

K.
