Crash problem with ATI Radeon 9800 SE

Forum Graphics & Displays : AMD Radeon Crash problem with ATI Radeon 9800 SE

Word :    Username :

My configuration:
AMD Athlon XP 2800
Sapphire ATI Radeon 9800 SE
Samsung 17" CRT
Windows XP SP2

Yesterday for the first time this problem occured.
I have started Windows XP and after showing of desktop I have noticed glitches and artefacts on screen (horizontal lines on wallpaper).
I have tried to install several diferent drivers (6.11, 6.12, 7.1) and to reinstall DirectX 9.0 C but nothing helped.
This glitches are dissapearing only when my ATI software after installation of new drivers reboot system and automatic turn off all 3D functions in DirectX.
After that it all works fine, but I have only 2D.
I have put GeForce 5200 instead and everything is OK, so I suppose that my ATI is dead, but I need to know is there maybe some other solution for fixing it.
Thank you in advance!!!

P.S. This problem occured from "nowhere". I did not change nor overclocked anything in my ATI graphic card!

Yup, sounds like the card is artifacting. Possibly do to overheating due to dust, but also possible to a now nearly dead card. If the heatsink is clean and the fan spins, you probably have a (nearly) dead card. Keep in mind that a 9800SE is a 4 pipeline card, so a 9600pro is about the same speed as what you have now.
