Satellite TV Reality Check

I finally took the plunge and bought a large screen HDTV and signed up for
Dish network satellite service.
I would have used digital cable but this service area is relatively
neanderthal with only one network HDTV outlet available.
The installers show up 6 hours late. They look at the house for a few
minutes and conclude they cannot mount the dish because they only know how
to secure the dish to fascia under the roof and they do not see an easy site
on this house. They admit they know no other way to mount the dish. They are
polite but obviously out of their depth.
Sort of like Condaleeza Rice (I can't help the political reference: outside
of her boss I have never seen someone so obviously incompetent in a postion
of power).
I point out the multiple satellite dishes mounted otherwise on other houses
in clear view, but to no avail.
They leave.
Digital satellite technology at the mercy of probably minimum wage
installers who only know how to secure a screw and a bolt in one way and one
way only.

And you got the service for how much? And you shopped around for companies
with experienced installers and technicians how much? In most markets there
are home theater specialists and dealers with experienced techs who know
what they are doing. Will you get the installation for free? Of course
not. Take some responsibility for your purchase and do some homework. If
you can't find anyone qualified to do it right, learn and do it yourself.
It is not that hard to do. OOPs, now that I read your political comments it
seems you may be one of those anti-Bush liberals that thinks someone else
should do the work for you...sorry, welcome to America, 1776-2004.

Not all of us pay our installers minimum wage. Some of us even make sure
that they are at the site on time. Heck some of us even send them to be
trained to do installations properly. We are probably the same people that
see that Rice and her boss work very hard and to do a virtually impossible
job and that the alternatives to them don't have any realistic or well
thought out solutions, only criticism.

Life is great in America 2004. We have unbelievable technologies available
for home entertainment at incredibly low prices. We also have better
service for those who wish to seek it out and pay for it.

Yep. Welcome to the world of commercial hype. My own satellite tech is
a bit better, having come into the business through the rough and tumble
world of C-Band. Mounted my dish on the balcony (I'm an apartment
dweller these days) without actually attaching anything to the building.

Take responsibility for installing it yourself: if one needs an operation
tell the surgeon how to do it or shop until you find a surgeon who will do
the operation the way you want it, whether that is correct or not.

By the way, the emperor really has no clothes although he is doing a good
job trying to convince the gullible.

No, the point is that most "trademen" aren't smart anymore. How many
master bricklayers do you know? Master woodworkers? Any more it's
just the same stupid people that continue to have jobs because the
people getting the equipment installed are dumber than they are.

Once you get an educated customer, look out.

He's not saying you *must* know everything about installing a
satellite dish. He's saying there are two options: 1) Find a
qualified technician to install it (which may cost money), or 2) Learn
how and do it yourself. He's not saying there is just option (2).

Your surgeon example would be correct if you added "shop until you
find a *qualified* surgeon", not one who will do it the way you want it.

Do you have a lucid point to make?

I damn sure do take responsibility for knowing exactly what a surgeon is
going to do, why, and what his level of experience happens to be. We always
check out doctors reputations before choosing them. Anyone who does
anything for me will get checked out before getting my business.

Typical right-wing lies.

Whether they call it "free" or not, he IS paying for his installation,
and he DOES have a right to expect someone with at least a "plan B"
way to install it. Installers are supposed to be able to install, and
appointments are supposed to be kept. Only a stupid right-winger
would deny any of these facts.

I recall she used to have an oil tanker named after her or something,
I think she was "on the board" of a big oil company that named their
ships after their directors.

Not surprising to see an oil company type in the Bush administration.

One does wonder what she did to get all the perks she's into.

Teaches at Stanford ? Must have been some class.

I only jump in here, as I saw some footage of her testifying to some
congressional/senate committee and wow, was she a turkey.

So do you just assume that any minimum wage Kwikee Khange monkey is going to
do it correctly? After experiences with both dealers and independents not
putting the correct amount of oil, using cheap filters, and not getting
valve adjustments even close, I do all of it myself or use a service center
that I found to have an excellent reputation for doing things right. The
point is, you can't assume that you are going to get good or effective
service in any area just by opening your checkbook. You have to shop for
service just like products.

One can only wonder what either you or Bmoag have in the way of either
education, intelligence or accomplishments in life that could begin to
compare with Condaleeza Rice. Here we have someone who is a
minority, grew up in modest circumstances, earned a PHD, became a
Stanford professor and went on to become one of the highest ranking
officials serving this country. Yet, guys who can't handle dealing
with a satellite dish installer find it necessary for some reason to
slam her. And what motives and mindset has one making these kinds of
remarks in an HDTV newsgroup?

Not impressed with your simplistic awe of padded resumes.

That's apparently education, intelligence or accomplishments enough.

Well... obviously you needed someone to pop your bubble about a simple
cold war republican intellectual lackey with no upside on the current
situation in the middle east.

But aside from that, what's your point ?

Can't stand an opposite opinion ?

yeah, you guys are a dime a dozen.

I'm just here to brighten up your miserable life, puppy dog.

Isn't that enough ?

PS Her bio really doesn't impress me. Intellectuals who publish what
the republicans want to hear will always do nicely in this world.

If you're impressed, that's your problem.

Because they're too stupid to actually follow through while he can. If he
wants the job done correctly, he may have to do it himself.

Yes, and of course university environments, where Rice spent much of
her career and steadily advanced to become Provost, are well known for
being bastions of Republican support, right? As I recall, Stanford
was under consideration for being the site for the Reagan Presidential
Library, but was rejected due to objections. The fact that you think
universities are typical places where Republican conservatives rule,
leads me to believe you didn't spend any time at any of them yourself.
That, plus the fact that instead of any rational discourse based on
facts, all your capable of are insults and one line smart answers are
clues to your bio.

Obviously you have LOTS of problems, Chet. First you seem to want to
beat this dead horse of an issue forever. Second, you don't know much
about Stanford. Try getting in and paying the tuition.

Goodbye now, Chet, go play with the other incessant debaters.
