I just bought one of the new JVC D'ILA HD TVs and got a Motorola
DCT6200 (or 6208 - I'm not sure) from Comcast. I have it connected
component (since DVI cables cost more than gold). If I set the cable
box to any output other than 480i, I lose all on-screen displays. The
guide doesn't work, the channel flip bar, nothing... I still get a
picture, though. Is this normal?

you are not watching the tv through the component input, this happens
through any other input. I accidently did the same thing.
It is not a problem with comcast. And DVI cables are not expensive, I bought
a Dell cable on ebay for about 8 bucks.

dvi cables are only expensive at appliance stores like best buy. They make
lots of money on cables. You can buy them for about 10% at a non-appliance
store if you can find them, or on the internet. You will likely not notice
any difference between these basic cables and the $100 monster cables.
Digital is more or less digital.

I got a good DVI cable on ebay for something like 8 bucks.
