I formated my drive and put in the first Madrake 10.1 CD. it boots to cd just fine, and I hit enter on the first welcome screen to begin the installation. It finishes detecting the usb and other hardware and continues just fine.
a blue screen is displayed with an "X" for the mouse pointer. Then... Nothing. it just sits there and doesn't do anything.

What am I doing wrong. Anyone help me out?

Im running an older P1 with an ASUS board....

Would you please post your full specs?

If you have a Pentium 1 with 64MB of RAM or less it will be hard to run a modern distribution on it.

Give Knoppix a try see if it boots up:

http://www.kernel.org/pub/dist/knoppix/KNOPPIX_V4.0.2CD-2005-09-23-EN.iso

If Knoppix doesn't work or is too slow try an older distribution.

Be sure to run a memtest on the system as well for about 1-4 days.

Memtest86+ is on the Knoppix CD, you can run it by typing in:

[code:1:b07692a47b]
memtest
[/code:1:b07692a47b]

@ the boot prompt

Otherwise you can download the memtest ISO:

http://memtest86.com/memtest86-3.2.iso.gz

or

http://memtest86.com/memtest86-3.2.iso.zip

burn it to CD-R, boot from it and let run for as long as possible
