Have been using this box for awhile now no issues until recently. Am using
the DVI output to my NEC plasma. Occasionally a black rectangle appears just
below center of the screen. It looks like a message or text box but there is
never anything in, its just black. Its temporarily removed by hitting the
menu, changing channels, etc. It seems to be appearing a lot more lately and
its a bit of an annoyance.

Sounds like you may have closed caption activated. Could be on sat or tv.
