Edit: Also see my post down in the thread about how I ran a HD 1080p video from Nvidia on my old 5700 and it was perfect!

-----------------------
I'm not satisfied with my PVR picture quality when I playback on one of my LCDs (19" 1280x1024). The pictures looks good on the regular TVs (via MVP and eithernet cable).

I know the recording quality "high" is still a lot less than 1280x1024, but I wonder if I can't get a better looking picture quality anyway with a better video card.

I have an old Gforce 5700 ultra.

Do I need "Avivo" for instance? If so, what cheaper Avivo do ya'll recommend?

I'm looking for any good card around $60-$100.

I'll also run my two 19" LCDs (Dsub or dvi) on it for everyday computer use of course.

So far, I found this article:

http://www.extremetech.com/article [...] 973,00.asp

which just says ATI type cards are better for video, but only for more difficult (noisy, etc) situations is the difference pronounced.

This still leaves the issue of finding a good sub $100 card....

Any ideas?

Here's the bunch on Newegg, priced under $100. Need to know your PCI slots (Pci 16, AGP, or what?).

Oh, here's the link!

If it looks good on one monitor but not another, the "bad" monitor might just need to have its settings adjusted. I would check this before buying a new videocard.

APG 8x. I thought about the 7600GS plenty, and it's tempting, then I also thought about how the price is likely better in a month or two, and I'm not suffering really in the meanwhile. And finally, there's the temptations that have to do with July and the ATI new generation, and how the lower 8800 cards will be coming soon too, and one of them near $150 I heard.....so I'm waiting for now, and yeah, I know all the considerations about APG in the long run and....etc. I don't really want to buy a new MB, mem, and OS yet, so.....I'll probably get some kinda 7600GS for under $100 soon enough....and then a new system in 12-15 months.

Also, I wonder about the X1650 pro and nearby cards, of course, and perhaps they make more sense, but!....I do want a quiet card, since I have a silent computer, a priority. the $122 fanless 7600GS is stored in my saved newegg wishlist of course.

It's always good to check the obvious! But yes, that's one of the first things. Actually my monitors are carefully adjusted, since I'm pretty picky about text sharpness, color, etc.

I am using a fanless 7600GS 256 meg card, if you aren't a hardcore gamer, it is quite dandy, and I am a gamer and it's still been OK for even Vanguard.

I checked on newegg, if you insist on under $100, here's the bargin for you:

It is quite possibly = to the 7600GS in performance, it's 256bit, not 128bit and you get 512 ram out of it.

Somehow I accidently hit this ad I think, and found this window as I was closing stuff this afternoon:

http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_hdcontent_home.html

When I played the 1080p video I found my old 5700 Ultra was razor sharp and beautiful on my monitor.

A nice big beautiful picture (1080p) with no stuttering.

Hmmmm......

Kinda Ironic, because their ad is supposed to show the advantage of a new card, yes???

So my problem was only and entirely that the TV capture video is of course small on the monitor at native TV resolution, and blurry at the full screen size.

So the solution is only software (or hardware) that interpolates it well, and makes it look good. TVs do this in neat analog ways I think.

Any suggestions for playback software??

I was just using Windows Media player in default settings.
