I hope somebody might be able to give some insight into this odd problem i am having with a dialup connection. I have two computers, both running windows xp professional. On one computer, no matter what ISP i dial into, the connection doesnt last for more than 10 minutes before i get cut off or it stops working. I have eliminated all the likely culprits as follows:

The modem is fine, i have even tried a different modem with a different chipset (still a winmodem tho), and both modems work in the other PC.

The ISP is fine, as the other PC works fine, i have even tried different ISP;s but the same thing always happens (better with some ISPs than others).

The computer is correctly figured, as its configured the same as the other one. I even re-installed windows Xp as its been driving me crazy and needed doing anyway.

Does anyone have any other ideas? It always used to work fine. If anyone can reccomend any diagnostic programs i would be grateful.

Thanks
Jonathan

Late reply...I had a very similar problem and it drove me insane...the solution was so easy I hadn't even thought about it...some motherboards just have slots your modem wasn't meant to be in...uninstall your modem and then move it to another slot...sounds like you are having a device conflict.

Thanks for the reply

About a week after making this post i thought about swapping the PCI slot that the modem was in, and hey presto! it works fine now.

The strange thing is the modem has been in that slot for as long as i can remember, and has never had problems before.

Anyway i just thought i would reply in case anyone else is having this problem and wanted to know how i got on.

Many Thanks
Jonathan

No problem bud :) Another thing I have discovered is sometimes its better to stick with windows xp drivers...I had a u.s robotics modem that would fail everytime I tried to use its own updated driver...go figure on that one.

It is strange how devices that worked fine in one slot mysteriously develop gremlins..another tip is...partition your operating system seperate from your data and your programs...back up and clean up your operating sytem with a clean install anytime all other logical means of fixing a trixsy situation won't fix it.
