Hi All.

I have come up against a problem I have never encountered before, so I'm looking for some advice....

a DVD burner reads pre recorded material, audio and video, but when you put any blank media (dvd/cd) into the drive the pc reboots, I have changed ide leads and molex connectors, updated the firmware and changed out the DVD/CD burner.

I have even gone so far as to work out the power requirements to see if the psu was at fault eg underpowered.

Any help offered would be great.

Sorry if this has been covered in a previous thread/topic, if it has could you point me in the right direction.

Thanks

This is an just an idea, but it sounds like a software problem.

I'm guessing that you have the Autoplay function active within windows. When inserting blank media, Autoplay may try and launch the appropriate application for this (depending on your settings).

I don't know what the default application you have installed for this, so you will need to check.

If you right-click on the DVD drive and select Properties, there should be an Autoplay tab. Select 'Blank CD' from list and check the settings and which applications are available.

You could try removing any DVD/CD burning applications and reinstalling to see if this fixes the problem.

Another method would be to deactivate the Automatic Restart function within Windows. You should then see an error message when inserting blank media (may be a blue screen or a small popup dialog box). This may provide information about a specific driver that is causing a problem which may help you to troubleshoot the problem.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tips, I will give the Autoplay and the Auto Restart a try, I did remove Nero 7, as this was a recent install, You have to check! The pc came with a pinnacle burning program, but was a bit limited (oem install).

I admit this is going to be a bit of a niggle for me, as the owner of the system is insisting on a no clean install, I have said it may come to this but he is sticking to his guns.

I will have access to the pc again at the weekend, so any hints and tips between now and then, I will take on board and try.

Thanks again

Sorry for the delay in giving thanks...

Thanks for all the hints and tips. I tried all suggestions still had problems as quoted. It turns out the dvd media was early edition over 5 years old and just would not read on this persons PC, new hardware.

I took the said dvd media home and tried it on my so called test PC worked a treat, but it built using old hardware, tried it on my good pc new hardware it just did not read.

Once again thanks to all who gave advice.
I think I might check the age of the recording media in future.
