I have a brand new 7600GT. I got a mobo with the Ati Xpress200 chipset. Will this impact the cards performance at all?

Good. I was just worried that ATi wouldn't let any nvidia card plugged in to it work. Is it a good chipset?

It works.. maybe your doubtful because you heard that you should pair the same chipset and GPU.. Actually that is wrong.. always pair ATi with Nvidia and vise versa april fools But with high end systems it tends to be better to pair the same together.. For instance, my mobo has a special feature allowing an auto-overclock in the bios for my GPU because it is nvidia based and so is the NF590 chipset....

Also, do you think the X1950PRO would be a better choice? I do plan to build a DX10 rig in fall, so this is just a temporary solution.

the thing is, even though the x1950 pro performs better than the 7600GT, the 7600GT is not bad at all. It should last you till fall any way.

soooo i'd pick the cheaper option

also the x1950 pro needs more power than the 7600GT, so you will need to take that into account aswell ( you may need to replace your psu if it cant power up the x1950 pro). in simpler terms -> more expenditure

Sooooo, unless your psu is has around 28-30 amps on the +12V rail, i suggest you go for the 7600GT, and then when you upgrade to dx10, go for a complete overhaul (psu and all)

So a 8600 uses less power than a 7600gt?

Beat me to it.

No, the GF8600 will use more power, but also perform better.

The higher end GF8600GTS is around the same power requirements as a GF7900GS, maybe more (depending on whether or not nVidia high-ended their power consumption figures). The GTS is expected to be about 75-90W. The GF7600GT is about 55W.
