I upgraded from an
Opteron 175 2.2GHz stock but OverClocked to 2.7GHz (FX-60+) running XP Pro with 2GB DDR running at 2-2-2-5 and an overclocked X1800XT at 688/792MHz core/mem
to a
Intel E6600 stock 2.4GHz but OverClocked to 3.0GHz (E6800+) running same XP Pro with 2GB DDR2 running 4-4-4-12 and with same overclocked X1800XT at 688/792MHz core/mem
This is the before and after results...
AMD Opteron FX-60+ 5,036 3DMark06
33.3 sec SuperPI 1mil
Intel E6600 stock 2.4GHz but OverClocked to 3.0GHz running same XP Pro with 2GB DDR2 running 4-4-4-12 and with same overclocked X1800XT at 688/792MHz core/mem
The Intel build would probably perform better in gaming than the AMD Opteron, have you tried running some benchmark on those system to see which has the highest score?
It depends on the game of course, but many are GPU bound to a large degree and only show small (or none!) improvements from a CPU upgrade. An X1800XT is not all that quick by todays standards and I doubt you'd see much of a difference in games between an Opty @ 2.7GHz and a C2D @ 3GHz unless the game is CPU bound (RTS, simulation and online FPS/RPG tend to be), then in which case the C2D may be up to ~30% faster.
The biggest difference you see though is in SuperPI, 33.3 on the opty to 16.8 i mean come on that a huge difference.
The benchmark showed some improvements however like another poster said X1800XT has be usurped by the X1900XT, so not going to see much a difference there.
I would suggest then your next upgrade be the 8800GTS 320MB for 300$ so far its unbeatable.
But it does keep my GPU fed data consitantly so it can perform at max possible framerates!!! Which is a plus.
And better performance is better to have than not have!
Yea but... SuperPI still means nothing for real world performance, although faster still is better. I have to kind of agree with SEALboy you know. Like what do you do on the forumz, talk but dont listen or something?
Well, yes I do know and thought I would contribute my real world upgrade results with re-using my existing graphic card for comparison.
If it is not of interest to you sorry to distract You can read the reviews, but actual users reporting can be closer to what is experienced by others contimplating... sorta like what forums are for, huh?
I think its more the question of "Does the C2D or AMD FX-60 perform better in Gaming?" that SEALboy is refering to your knowledge about. I think it depends on how you interpret the question. Its either you are genuinely asking coz you dunno or as a rhetorical, questioning your beliefs. My guess is its meant to be the 2nd interpretation but it sounds like the 1st at a glance.
It is a shame that I do not have both running today, soon, I hope to have it running again to test further...
I prev was running Corsair RAM at 5-5-5-15 with a 334 fsb, just read Thomas Soderstrom's Corsair review at SysOpt showing them supporting 3-3-3-6 timings up to 400fsb, so I now am running stable at 334MHz x 9 = 3.0GHz at 3-3-3-8 timings!!!
