I am building a house and want to test my OTA reception at the home before
the dish is mounted. Is it possible to receive OTA on the 811 without a
dish connected?

Thanks,
-
Robert

Press Menu in the upper left of the remote. Key in 6-1-5 for the Local
Channel page. Select Scan Digital and when its done repeat on
Scan Analog. Be sure to choose Save before leaving the display.
Press Cancel a few time to get back to the regular TV screen.

Press Guide to see your channels listed. These off-air channels will
be listed just below your Dish channels. The digital channels will
have the call letters displayed, not so on the analog. I think your
811 has a option where you can label each off-air channel. To go
directly to a off-air station key in like 014 for channel 14 for
analog. Key in 0141 for digital of that same station.

If your 811 ever gets hosed up, (black screen). Simply hold in the
power button about 5 seconds or if the blue LED blinks once then let
go. It will restart the receiver and all will be ok in minute or so.

Enjoy,

If the 811 is like the 921 then NO you will not be able to test OTA
until your receiver has a signal from dish.

That is correct. The 811 will not receive OTA channels unless it has a
satellite signal from Dish.

In other words, it CANNOT be used simply as an OTA receiver without
activation by Dish.

This is understandable by everyone except those who keep trying to get
something for nothing.

It is a Dish receiver--with the added capability of receiving OTA
seamlessly.

It is not just a HD set top box that Dish provides free with no commitment
to Dish programming.

No, the 811 is designed to receive OTA only when it is connected to DISH.

Would it work if only hooked up to the Dishnetwork FTA channel?
"congrats you have a dish 500 system" e.g.

I know that you and most other people asking this and similar questions
about 811 receivers are honestly wanting information and perhaps do not have
access to an 811 Owner's Guide which plainly states this:

The Antenna/Cable Input connection "can only be used if your receiver is
activated with qualifying DISH Network programming

I believe that no matter how one may want or wish it to be otherwise an 811
cannot be used as an OTA receiver only.

I don't believe Dish is being unreasonable to expect (require, demand) that
as they are in the business of providing satellite programming, not a
charitable organization giving away receivers.

The Dish 811 receiver once installed has the complete Dish channel
list.. Using its menu, you add the off-air analog and digital
channels. The 811 list those stations down below channel 100 in the
Dish menu. It makes for quick channel selections from the dish list
to the off-air HD network channels. I have two 811's, one on a HD
set and the other one on analog set till the HD prices come down maybe
next year.

I think you can get this receiver free if you coming from Direct TV or
any Cable company. Its easy to call and find out.....800-333dish

A key point of interest to 811 owners is that when you notice a storm
approaching, put the receiver on a local digital sub channel displaying
local radar. You WILL continue to receive that channel after rainfade shuts
down satellite reception, but DO NOT attempt to change channels or you will
be out of luck until the rainfade event ceases.

You can use this receiver for over air, as long as you have signal from
a dish!! I just hooked up an 811 yesterday and it is not yet been
activated! I am able to watch overair and some promo chanels. To see
what would happen without sat signal I unhooked the cable while on an
overair station and the station styed on and I was able to input
another local station as long as I did not change to a sat chanel!
