I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron laptop. The OS is Windows XP Home with
SP2 (pre-installed). I have been having a problem with installing and
uninstalling certain programs. For example, when I try to INSTALL Norton
Anti Virus, I get the message "Error 1606. Could not access network location
%USERPROFILE%\Recent\." The program then refuses to install. In the same
manner, when I tried to UNINSTALL one of Dell's programs, Jasc Paint Shot
Photo Album 5, I get the SAME message, and the program refuses to uninstall.
The Dell technicians advise me to "RESTORE" the computer to its original
state. Of course, then I lose the two week's work that I have done in
setting up my programs, settings, etc., and I'm not sure it will cure the
problem.
Can anyone advise me what this error message means? I am NOT on a network
and am the ONLY user with no other "account" set up.

The user profile contains files associated with each user - in this case you
'Recent' refers to the folder which contains shortcuts to recently used
documents etc
I assume that you have deleted or corrupted this folder
Try this
Go to Documents and Settings/your name
then ensure you can see hidden folders
(To do this Tools menu / Folder Options
then view
then ensure show hidden files and folders is selected)
Now you should see a folder (sort of faded) called Recent
I think it will not be there so create it
I hope this works
