Assuming I have two computers, one a laptop (the OS could change on this machine as it is swappable), and one a desktop running XP. In between these computers I have a USB Flash drive. I switch from [laptop to flash drive] to [desktop to flash drive] as a means of quick file transfer. Are there negative side effects of doing this, and is this the best solution?

A flash drive has a finite amount of read/write cycles before it becomes usless, so eventually your going to need to replace the drive. Other then that there shouldnt be any negative side effects.

Not sure about windows, but I know with Mac OS X you can just hook up a usb or firewire cable between the two computers and swap files.
