I am new in this forum. Sorry if this has been discussed before.

Can anyone tell me why sometimes the old single core Athlon XP 3200+ is more expensive on Ebay than a brand new Athlon 64 x2 4200+?

I am probably missing something here...

you could probably pickup a new mobo and cpu that would be better for less than the price of a XP3200

Or it could just be someone on EBay trying to rip you off...you never know.

The people on Ebay cannot "rip you off" they simply post things up for auction. Some people are just very stupid and lazy to find out what something is actually worth.

For examples:
I just upgraded from XP2500+ and AGP to C2D and PCI-E. Now I sold off my mobo, CPU, HS & fan, vid card and ram to help cover the cost of my upgrade.

Someone bought my Thermalright SI-97A and 92mm fan for $60+S&H. I paid $40 for a Scythe Ninja 1100P 120mm HS and fan

My X800XT sold for $180+S&H on a buy it now and it sold about 15 minutes after I posted it in the motherboard section by mistake!!! the auctions that went full term were selling thier X800XT's for around $225!!!! I got my X1950XT for $200 after a $20 rebate.

My XP 2500+ went for $50+S&H

My socketA DDR400 mobo went for $70+S&H within an hour on a buy it now. I spent $120 to get a DS3 rev 3.3

I sold my OCZ DDR1 400/600 (very hight end ddr400)2x512 for $180+S&H. I got my 2x1GB of patriot extreme DDR800 4-4-4-12 for less than that.

So basically I sold my 5 core components of my XP2500+ agp system and got about $600 for all my parts minus shipping costs. I only paid $1000 for my upgrade to Core 2 Duo, 2x1gb DDR800, X1950XT, DS3. Included in that thousand I bought a 19" widescreen LCD.

Point is people on ebay are willing to pay way more than stuff is worth. Then again, things are worth whatever people are willing to pay!!

I've gotta agree with Logain, its all about basic economics. Whatever the market will bear will be the price that parts are sold for. As these Socket A parts get more rare the people just hoping to stave off buying a new computer will pay more and more.

People find it easier to remain familiar rather force change on themselves . This is a true human principal .

People don't like change period . So when they have to buy everything new it forces too much change on them at the same time.

Thus more demand for older tech leads to higher prices.

This is not economics or anything else just my understanding of human psychology . :D

Anyway whats the problem you are getting newer tech for less dosh $ :D

Enjoy

For one thing the 3200+ is a "socket A" processor (old school now) and the 4200+ is a "socket AM2" processor (latest build). They are 2 totally different processors. Their respective pinouts are not even close. They don't make the 3200+ any more.

they haven't been making socket a parts since skt 754 came out!! the 3200+ xp is the 2nd fastest Barton ever made...only the 3400+ was "faster" but i think it had the same clock...not sure though...but anyway a lot of people bought really nice stuff for skt a (like nice mobo with agp and ddr400) and theres not a whole lot of a reason for them to upgrade the whole compy..
