Does anyone use Windows Server 2003 SP1 or the R2 edition?
I would like to try out Windows Server 2003 SP1 or R2 with Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition, SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition and Office 2003 Professional for Windows applications and database development.

I'm hoping to receive opinions on Windows Server 2003 in regard to how well it would work or if it will work on single user instance licence and using a virtual network. In other words the computer Windows Server 2003 is installed on will not be on a network.

Also if anyone knows of good communities or blogs I could browse to find the information I'm interested in would be helpful.

Presently I'm using WinXP Pro SP2 with Office 2003 Pro SP2, Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition and SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition SP1.

Yea, I run Win 2k3 server R2 on one of my machines.
Mainly because its an efficient OS with no fancy stuff to steal resources.

Yes I have the programs running on WinXP Pro SP2

I'm interested in Win Server 2k3 because I have never used a server OS before and I want to test and develop Windows applications and test and run databases on a Win2K3 platform.

One problem is I live in Canada and it seems nearly impossible for a private individual to purchase a copy of Win Server 2K3.
I have two trial copies of Win Server 2k3
One copy is a 180 day trial of Win Server 2k3 Standard Edition.
The other copy is a 180 day trial of Win Server 2k3 R2 Enterprise Edition.

I would like to have a permanent install without having to deal with the Trial time limit.
Nor do I want to spend over a $1000 on an OS that will only be used for learning interests. Any applications and databases I develop are for my own use.

I have been looking but without success unless getting viruses is something successful.
While trying to find the #$%&^*@ I caught a dozen infections. However I've been vacinated.
I did find a few vendors that sell OEM versions of Windows Server 2003. I wish I could find out how to get an acedemic version. I'm also going to try a contact I made at MS Canada to see if I can get a fully licenced evaluation copy without the "time bomb".
If I have to I guess I'll shell out the dough for an OEM copy.

I PM'd an old member here. They linked me up to an online distributor in the US that sells MS products. I was able to get a copy of Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition without SP1 for a little less than $630 CDN. I should receive it by UPS tomorrow.
The least expensive version of Windows Server 2003 R2 from a Canadian online retailer was $1400 CDN. I could not find a Canadian online retailer that stocked Win Server 2k3 Standard Edition.
When I install I'm going to download all the updates for Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition.
I know (I'm fairly sure) it can't be updated to the R2 edition but at least Win Server 2k3 Standard Edition is still a current product that is updated monthly. And it suits my needs to learn how a server OS works.

Here's a question for you guys: What's the relationship between Win2K3 & R2. I've tried looking for info about it off and on, but MS's site is a huge round-about in terms of information that never really tells you. Do you need 2K3 SP1 before you can install R2? If so, does a purchase of R2 also get you a copy of 2K3 SP1? What are the actual tangible benefits of R2 vs. the marketing jargon? Thanks

From what I have researched Win Server 2K3 R2 it is an updated relaease of Win Server 2K3 SP1. However I don't think you can update SP1 To R2.
I think (I know this is a horrible comparison) it's like going from Win 98 SE to Win ME.

Windows Server 2003 R2 Updates

Windows Server 2003 Products

I hope this helps you out.
