I called Samsung to find out the differences between the 56" DLP TVs, the
HLN5663W and the HLN567W. Their web site shows that the 63W uses the HD3
chipset but there is no indication about the 7W except that it has a 0.8"
chip. I wanted to know if it was the HD2+.

However, the recommendation was to wait for the HLP5674 which would have all
the latest bells and whistles. The technician indicated that the machines
that I was asking about were being phased out.

Does anyone know anything about this HLP5674? Should I wait? Is it a good
thing to get the first production run of a new model?

Why do they change model numbers from HLN... to HLP...?

The 567W is last year's model, it uses the HD2 chip.

The 5674 is, supposedly, going to start showing up in stores in early
November. The 5674 will have better contrast than the 567W or the 5663,
though your eyes may prefer the slightly "softer" picture of the 5663.
Whether it's a good idea or not will be mostly proven in hindsight, though
the 5674 isn't supposed to be introducing much in the way of new
technology (the HD2+ chip is in use in lots of other DLP TVs from
different vendors). So the 5674 might be a safer buy than some other 1st
production runs, but it's still going to carry more risk than a unit from
later production runs.

Different year's models.

Scott,

Thanks for the feedback. Since the price for the yet to be delivered 5674
I've seen quoted is almost twice the 5663 (~$2800) while the inital demand
is there, I suppose I'll go with the current model.

I'll be surprised if the 5674 actually goes for anywhere close to
$5600, most of the other TVs in it's size range are going for around
$3500-4000.
