Had the 850E been so affordable, and RDRAM would've been priced near DDR, it'd been the top Intel chipset, but alas, wasting well over 100$ Canadian is not my thing for "slightly better" performance.

P4's need this extra performance to beat AMD. VGA charts show than with DDR, P4 3.06 GHz can't beat an AXP 2700+. Now think about 2800+ or P4 2.66 GHz w/ DDR vs. AXP 2700+ ...

We talking best chipset now, or best chipset for it's time?
We are talking about the best chipset released in 2002

Ouch, the best chipset of 2002... tough choice, so many to chose from... and how to base such a decision..? Performance, technological influence, personal prefference... Well, I answered your poll with the "NForce 2" (common, 333FSB & Dual DDR) though I can't complain about the VIA KT333 (hell, I've got an MSI KT3Ultra), except for a couple of little things, its still my favorite. Mind you, performance speaks novels... Though my heart stays with VIA, my glutony directs me towards NVidia's ...
As for Intel, no question about it, its the 845PE... I've used it, its great, and the price is (just a little over) right.
...but its still no Athlon chipset !
Staggering out of the shower this morning, I hear the hair-dryer. "Whose awake?" I think... Till I realize its my computer - talk about a windtunnel
Well it's almost unanimous. Even the Intellites are admitting it all around the tech world, nForce 2 really did great.

Because nForce2 is not from AMD, Intellites doesn't dislike nVidia

Hmm yeah true, but then again it is FOR AMD, so some would then be annoyed that the best chipset out there is not on their ball field.

They only will begin the Hammer with their own temporarily, but I also doubt they will do more chipsets afterwards for the K8.

nVidia is now offering a good non-VIA solution, so there's no need for AMD making chipsets. In the days of AMD 750/760, there was no non-VIA AMD platform. After the launch of nForce(1), AMD discontinued their AMD 760 chipset

Yes however the K8 uses very different design such as an on-die controller, so I think despite other chipset makers having already K8 chipsets ready, AMD will probably be the most stable one of all, as they know the most about how their K8 behaves.

nForce2 just impressed me alot.. its very stable, and this Dual channel DDR thing is cool!
i can't wait to build my new rig
Xp2800+
Asus a7n8x (nForce2)
ati 9700pro
lian li case
enermax psu
lite-on 52x cd-rw
1 gig pc3200 cas2 corsair xms
2 maxtor drives, 60gb and 120gb
sony dvd-rw
I guess when nVidia will release a K8 chipset, AMD will stop making their own K8 chipset

There is a Crush K8 one ready but again, it may not be the best performer at first against AMD's own chipset. Unless they will also endorse Dual DDR for CH since it doesn't use it, like Athlons.
K8 processors will have on-die memory controller. So why performance will vary between chipsets? Then we will choose chipsets regarding features and stability.

True. However AMD's will probably be the most stable running, and may have its own tweaks. It's like Intel's chipsets, guaranteed to be sturdy because they were made for a platform made by their own maker.

That's really not specific. Best achivement for its time, or best performance now? Because if all are to be judged by the standards of right now, nothing released over a few months ago has a hope... hence it's not really talking about ALL of 2002.
Judjement standards are all performance, stability and features.
