The new HD-ILA sets like the HD61Z585 appear to perform very well, but a
couple of reviews I read sound a little ominous. The problem seems to be the
heat generated by this set. Buyers are complaining about the fan noise, and
one new owner says the heat it put out in 3 hours raised the temperature in
his living room to an uncomfortable level. It looks like JVC has cleverly
avoided saying anything about the wattage demand of the set or the cost and
availability of replacement lamps for it. Anyone know what wattage the set
is rated at? How many lamps are used - - 1, 2 or 3? What is its (their?)
life expectancy? How much does a new lamp cost? Is it (are they) replaceable
by the set owner?

When Sony put the 60" LCD rear-projection set I bought on the market, they
were eager to mention the low electricity demand of the set, the long life
expectancy of the single lamp used in its 3-panel optical engine, and the
low cost of a new lamp, replaceable by the set owner. All this info seems to
be missing for the JVC HD-ILA sets, so maybe the answers aren't very
favorable. Too bad, the picture JVC puts on screen is so exceptional - - I
guess there had to be a catch.

Chuck,

They are not as ominous as you suggest.

There is one lamp. It is easy to replace with instructions in the owner's
manual. It has the same life exectancy as DLP & Sony's LCD. Power consumption
is 195 watts. The fan can be heard if you stand 2-3 feet from the set but not
noticable at 8 feet...or normal listening distance. And, it is no louder than
DLP sets.

I hope this answers your questions.

Thanks for posting a real life experience. Too many times it seems
there are innuendos and "I heards" which if there are no first hand
experiences available, are better than nothing. However, this helps
calm my fears about getting such a set (which I'm working towards in
the next couple of months.)

Sounds as if you have one or worked on one. Do you have one at home
to take it out of the store lighting and brief time one has to look at
them side by side, vs. tweak it to your own liking?
