I have the Sony KP-53HS10 1081i capable TV. The TV does not display in
720p. Recently I purchased an LG HDTV off-air tuner/DVD player, which
can receive HDTV broadcasts and is supposed to "upsample" DVD's to as
close as possible to 1080i.

When I view HDTV broadcasts in the 1080i mode, there is a red-green
color offset/convergence problem. The problem is not correctable using
the systems "Flas Focus" feature. When I set to 480p mode, the
offset/convergence goes away. The picture is very clear and sharp at
480p, about DVD quality but still not HDTV resolution.

Likewise, I have been unable to view a DVD in anything greater than
480p. Even though I choose the 1080i setting on the DVD player, my
Sony TV is showing the display at 480p, according to the large letters
in the TV's display mode. My TV seems unable to display a DVD at
anything greater than 480p, and cannot properly display an HDTV
broadcast at 1080i without the color offset.

I am using component cables and the DTV5 jack on my TV. Thanks in
advance for any help you can provide.

Sounds like it may be time to have a tech do the complete dynamic
convergence and registration adjustments, inclusive of initializing the
flash focus. Not necessarily a do-it-yourself type of job unless you have
access to the service manual and can actually comprehend how.
