This is a Venice 3000+ and it will run four DIMMs at DDR-333 memory strap at 1T command rate and four DIMMs at the full DDR-400 strap at a 2T rate. I'd suggest leaving the strap at DDR-333 and 1T and then doing a straight-up LDT overclock to reach 2.8. The 3000+ has a 9x multi, so an LDT bus of 311 MHz gives you a core speed of 2.80 GHz. The RAM will be running at basically rated speed- 260 MHz, or DDR-520 (PC4160.) so it should handle 1T just fine.
I'd STRONGLY suggest that you overclock in small steps. You're wanting a 1 GHz overclock, which is over 50%. That's a big damn increase and your chip may not make it all the way to 2.8. Raise the LDT bus speed by 5 MHz and then run Prime95 or Folding@Home or something else to check stability. If it passes, raise the bus again. If it fails, add volts and then try again. Don't simply set your CPU at your desired overclock all at once as you might end up with stability issues that will plague you. Approaching your target slowly from beneath will result in a stable system.
Thanks for the good input here, sounds like it might be better if i went with two dimms to make this more doable,, anyone have a good 2 gig kit out there for sale? Also i`ll need to part with the four 512 sticks i have . What do you guys think? Thanks
Well . i had 3 amd 64 3000+ venice all of them do 2.4 with stock volt. and 2.8ghz with 1.65 volt.
one of them if i remenber was from week 17 go 2950 with 1.55v (water cooled) load temp was 36c. idle was 27C
Hope that u got a good one
Thanks, i do too. The guy i bought it from has gone 2.8 with wc setup, i`ll lap a few things and run a tuniq 120 and an evercool nb fan. I hope i can do what MU_Engineer said.. i`ve read the improved mem controller in the e3 stepping 3000 allows better command rate. It`s bound to be an improvement over what i have now and will be a good learning experience for me. Thanks for all the input everyone.
