is the 8800gts 640mb worth the extra 100 bucks if iam just playing games on a 1280x1024 monitor?

I think i should just save that money for a watercooling system annd get the 8800gts 320mb!

what you guys think?

nope, at that resolution you will see very little difference with current titles. The only game I have played so far that is reliant on more memory is GRAW (see the benchmark at the bottom of page in this review here), it is the only one in this roundup that shows any improvement in having 640Mb on tap at the 1280 setting.

I asked myself the same question (since I am stuck at 1280 and less also), so I opted to get the 320Mb version as well since I like my trusty CRT for now and I don't plan to upgrade it anytime soon.

I know enuff is enuff, but Id like to point out in the guru 3d review/benches that the 320 version gets less fps than the 640 by a large margin , larger than the 7950 loses to the 320 version. To me thats a big hit

Yeah can i get a link , i would really like to read that article . :)

Here it is : http://www.guru3d.com/article/content/416/13/ They say that this will be typical of future games, games that will have large textures. For the most part the 320 shines, but on some games it wont. Id rather buy more ram than to oc my way to better output

If you plan on playing anything using the DooM 3 engine, such as quake 4 the you will want the 640. I would suggest the 640mb or higher if you plan on keeping the card for alil while, and just leave the 320mb alone. That is what I would do if I was you! By the way when in Ultra quality on almost every res my video card or it may have been the X1950XTX 512mb trumpled the 320mb in Quake 4. I believe I saw that on Tom's I could be mistaken. Hope this helps!

Of course the 320mb model is enough for 1280x1024. Heck its powerful enough for 1600x1200 and 1900x1200 in just about any game out right now. It really only starts to show its limits when you throw in anti-aliasing at those resolutions.

With my video card (See Below), I can max out every game I have at 1280x1024 (BF2/2142, F.E.A.R., Quake 4, Call of Duty 2, Need For Speed: Most Wanted/Carbon, plus alot more), and the 8800 GTS 320MB beats my card in processing and memory.
