My understanding is that the X6800 is the only C2D not included in the price cuts. Of course you can wait and see if you want to.

That PSU should be plenty for dual 8800GTX. NVidia even says so:

OCZ 8500+ sli should be great for your system

For PSU, OCZ GameXStream 600W or 700W, Seasonic S12 Energy+ 550W.

For RAM, G.Skill, Patriot, OCZ. I would go with OCZ than the other ones.

Hope this helps you on what you want to get.

You don't say whether you're overclocking the new build, but I think you are, judging by your sig. In that case, get micron d9 ram such as buffalo firestix or g.skill HZ.
April 8, 2007 2:56:27 PM

OCZ or Team Group.

That's a helluva setup. Good luck!

Intel Core 2 x6800 (will buy on the 22nd) CPU
nVidia 680i SLI MB
EVGA 8800 GTX Superclocked VGA
Sound Blaster x-Fi Elite SC
Western Digital 150gb Raptor (Apps and OS) HD
Seagate Barracuda 500gb 7200.10 HD (Storage)

Swiftech H20-220 Apex Ultra+ (maybe) Water Cooling

Im at a loss for memory as the 680i is killing alot of memory

The X6800 will infact get the price cuts. But I would just step down to a E6600. Snag that during the price cuts at 213.00. That would save you a load of money to buy a nice 2x1GB ram set. I recommend G.Skill and the OCZ PC8500 SLi edition Ram like yakyb stated.

Good Luck :)

I have chosen 2Gb of Dominator. You think those others are better? Also, I chose the x6800 in case I decide to NOT overclock, and if I did... I should be able to OC higher then the others... correct?
April 9, 2007 4:17:25 AM

also... if I didnt watercool... what are the best air cool solutions? It would definitly save me some dough!
April 9, 2007 4:18:53 AM

Tuniq Tower, Scythe Infinite and Scythe Ninja and also the Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro (Budget cooling).
April 9, 2007 4:23:13 AM

I am waiting to buy the CPU... still might go with the qx6700. That would also entail according to PSU calculator the 1KW instead of the 750. I am leaning more toward the x6800 though.
April 9, 2007 4:23:25 AM

Noctua NH-U12F....better than the Scythes and Zalmans. Quieter too. Best kept secret around, I highly recommend it.
April 9, 2007 4:26:00 AM

I keep forgetting about the Noctua NH-U12F for some reason but yeah it is an excellent source of cooling.
April 9, 2007 4:57:17 AM

If money is no object go for the QX6700, it will do better than the X6800 in Crysis and after.

The Q6600 will be better value for the money after April 22 than either QX6700 and X6800.

Why X-Fi Elite? It costs a lot more than X-Fi ExtremeMusic and I doubt you need any of the additional features.

Good luck!

Dominator is overpriced, imo. Look, there are 2 brands of bread - that taste the same & have the same ingredients, but one is cheaper than the other. Which one would you get?

x6800 has x11 multiplier. If you get 400mhz fsb stable on air, 400 x 11 = ? With mine it would be 2.8ghz.

April 9, 2007 1:09:23 PM

The X6800 is not going down on the 22nd. The E6850 will be released then though.
April 9, 2007 4:11:53 PM

Wouldnt I have to get the 1KW if I go for the QX6700? I live in apt right now and I dont want to blow any breakers! lol That is kind of why I was leaning toward the x6800. I guess we will find out the real prices on the 22nd... its like looking fwd to a holiday! lol Also, for games like BF2... I hear some people have to disable cores to get them to work?
April 9, 2007 4:19:15 PM

The X6800 is not going to come down this April. It will in June though. The QX6700 is going to be $513 on the 22nd. I would go with teh E6700 for now and get the QX6800 in June if you want. And no, you would not need a 1kW PSU.
April 9, 2007 4:22:16 PM

Why Waste your money on a Extreme Processor? I run my E6600@3.5GHz I don't believe you will run the X6800 any higher than that. So you will feel jiped of $600 or so. I believe any good DDR2 800 would work well I use some cheap G.Skills PC6400 ZX 4.0-4-4-12 @ 2.0~2.1V F2-6400PHU2-2GBZX that won't go quite 800 Mhz 1:1 but I still get 3.5 GHz. I would Recommend the G.Skills DDR2 800 with Micron IC's Balisticx have them as well.

April 9, 2007 4:28:44 PM

To be honest, a C2D 6600 will quite simply kick A$$ at a very affordable price. It will let you overclock it well beyond a 6800. There is really no reason to get a 6800 unless you will ONLY be running stock, or if you want to get INSANE overclocks. It simply is not worth the money when you can OC a 6600 higher for like $600 less. Just think what you can do with $600 saved!!! You can buy dual 22" LCDs, or get phase change cooling, or take a trip to Europe!!

Seriously, it's your money to waste, but the 6800 isn't needed. Go with a 6600 and OC the snot out of it.
April 9, 2007 4:33:54 PM

...You should really work on hiding those wires...
April 9, 2007 4:46:41 PM

I know I did see every thing is wraped around and stuffed under the drive cages but this case and non modular power supply and Mother board (Power is on the wrong side) is just a mess.

Here my HTPC is Cleaner.

Back to the subject, Darn I think the RAM you chose is not the best Value I've heard of Pep's getting the DDR 1066 Speed with the DDR 800 from G.skill PC2 6400 RAM (F2-6400CL4D-2GBHK) 1GB HK to DDR2 1000 4-4-3-5 "Woot Woot, I'm in love we these sticks! 1000mhz @ 4-4-3-5 2.35v" said Whodie on Overclock.net

And the Mother Board is really expensive I only Paid $160 and mine Rocks DFI Infinity 975X/G

Proof, I wanna see your cabling job. You got a hotrod but nobody's seen it. I would LOVE to see how your cabling looks. Come on, post some pics already. $10 says it's a mess and nowhere near as good as what you profess for advice to others ;)

Not bad so far, that Stacker is cavernous.

Don't see a HSF or 6 hard drives though?
April 9, 2007 6:38:41 PM

It is being lapped and the Raptor (3 of them) are in the mail as are the mounting brackets so I don't have to use that shitty 4in3 crap anymore.
April 9, 2007 9:26:57 PM

Hey Proof... let me know how that dominator works with your 680i. Ive been reading that peeps are having a ton of problems running Ram with that board. The e6600 was my original choice and I think you guys are right about the x6800... now just to narrow down between that and the qx6700. lol I guess my biggest issue with the qx6700 is that my 750 might not be able to handle it well enough with my set up. Nice build you got there yourself... wish my wife was nice enough to let me spend that much on a case! I currently have a silver Chieftec with clear side and 4 red LED 80mm fans. I would use my old case but I think it would be a shame to tear apart a nice computer. How much do you think I could get for my current set up if i sold it to an ameture? lol
April 9, 2007 9:28:51 PM

Those people are just whiny little punks. It works fine.

Totally. HK would be the 2nd choice if HZ is out of stock or too expensive. Ballistix is pretty good as well & very popular among overclockers on some forums.
April 10, 2007 5:30:59 AM

Well... my revised build is in my first post! Flame away! I will be ordering everything except CPU this week. Thanks for all your help again! Peace
April 10, 2007 5:36:04 AM

That's a helluva setup. Not cheap, but kickA$$. Kudos to you!

Enjoy and good luck!
April 10, 2007 11:20:45 AM

I am getting 1080 speed on my DDR2 800 Dominator. The test setup I use allowed me to push it there.
April 10, 2007 11:42:10 AM

Man, that's a dream machine. Good job on the components.
April 10, 2007 3:19:19 PM

I buy a new computer every year or so. I been doing this for 20 Years and have learned to shop for the Best Value. It makes me feel dumb to buy things that are expensive and get old quickly. For exapmle I have an old Vesa Local Buss Mother Board attached to the Wall of my Garage with a Dimond Viper Video Card with 64 MB of VRAM it cost me $250 and is worthless. Lets see how many more 3D Marks you get in the 06 Version. My record is 10800 with a two thousand dollar Rig.

Why is your stuff being Lapped I did mine in an Hour with some sand paper I got at AutoZone 800-1000 Grit. A Miror I use in the bottom of my Rig and some Brass-O.

April 10, 2007 4:05:09 PM

Can you give me a tutorial? I was going to give it to my buddy to do but I would rather do it myself.

I found a Nice 3M Multi Pack of Fine grit sand paper at Auto Zone I think it was $3.50. It has 400, 800, 1000 Grit I used the 800 First then the 1000 Grit. I read you should rub the C.P.U. on the sand paper on a piece of glass. I used a 12" square of a mirror I had (I like to cut them and put them in the bottom of my case). I turned the C.P.U. every few seconds and reverenced circular I could see places where the Nickel would stay after most other parts were copper so I guess it had high and low sports. I read someone use Magic Wadding to polish I had Brass-O so I polished it with paper towels and Brass-O until I could see my face in it. I have only had 24 hours to let the Artic Silver 5 cure and my temps are already 2 Celsius cooler at Full Load running Orthos 74C (65C with Core Temp)@3.2 GHz I'm told it takes a week or so for the Thermal Paste to cure.

This is where I originally posted this but these guy know more than me.

Thanks dude! I have Masscool SHin-Etsu. I hear it is better.
April 10, 2007 7:58:43 PM

I need a good CPU cooler now, I might wait to watercool.
April 10, 2007 8:03:06 PM

CoolerMaster Gemini or Noctua NH-U12F. I refuse to buy a Tuniq Tower.
April 10, 2007 11:42:01 PM

Noctua FTW! Best kept secret out there..........
April 11, 2007 1:57:45 AM

Damn straight. All Noctua fans in my rig baby. Nothing but the best! The Gemini does not seem to be very popular either. I am expecting to see at least a 7C drop from the Noctua. Maybe even more if I lap my proc.

!!!MY E6600 COMES TODAY!!!
April 12, 2007 3:17:03 AM

Well, I ordered my stuff today. I went with the 800mhz Dominator instead of the 1066mhz. I did this because it seems like everybody that has 1066 or above is having problems on the nVidia 680i MB. Hey Proof, why didnt you wait until the 22nd to get your e6600? My CPU is the only thing I havent ordered yet, waiting for the price drop. Hell, I might go with a diff CPU then the QX6700 (the nVidia 680i MB isnt well with the quad either). We'll see how much those prices go down... then Ill decide on the CPU. Peace
April 12, 2007 3:20:04 AM

I couldn't wait.
April 12, 2007 4:00:27 AM

Well even though its too late I wanted to chime in and say the 750 Silencer is absolutely enough power for the Qx6700 + 8800 GTX.

Also I play Battlefield 4 hours a day and it runs smoothly on the QX6700.

I would have also stressed you give the G.Skillz a try since they Overclock Like MAD and have dropped so low in price I just ordered another pair 20 minutes ago.

I also finally grabbed the HT Omega Claro soundcard I have been waiting to come back in stock at Newegg... Great Card... and if you have the time you might want to compare it to the Fatality SoundCard - pound for pound I think its the best choice right now... from what I have read of its specs.

Its kind of a bummer lately... everywhere I read - everyone is smackin down the big bucks and getting serious systems... leaving less and less hope that the few others of us who have them will have systems that out perform most. :?

Nice Build bro...
April 12, 2007 4:22:35 AM

Believe me... if the Dominator doesnt work, my next buy will be Gskilz. Also, depending on the price drops, I may still get a QX6700. My main hope is that they drop the price of the x6800. Afetr watercool, that chip should fly... maybe hit 5Ghz (on water), I would be happy with 4Ghz. My main concern with the QX is the heat output. Right now I may just stick with a good fan if I get the reg Dual Core... if I go QX then watercool would definitly be beneficial. Any CPU cooling fan recommendations if I get a Dual?
