Haven't played Mafia yet, GTA3 is good.

I heard that Mafia is a pretty good game. GTA3 is just a gaming legend now, though. If I were to recommend one or the other to someone, it'd be GTA3 (as long as they had a somewhat-powerful computer.....or a PS2).

Because it's not out for PC yet.

If we're talking PS2 then sure, Vice City.

I haven't played mafia, but I have played GTAIII.

It's a really fun game, but make sure your pc can handle it. I'd recommend at least a GeForce3. I've used a GF2, but it gets a little chunky.

I got tired of GTA III's very industrial colored and gloomy skies environment. This is not like the PS2's back cover of the game, where it sounded very bright, full of it.
On my comp it seems so dark and gloomy, the areas look muddy, and anyways the game has lots of motion blur.

I guess that lowered a lot of the replayability or the need to continue the game.
I hope Vice City uses bright, crisp textures on PC. Whenever a PS2 game hits PC, the detail level, the bilinear filtering all get ported to hell and it looks like it has twice less polygons as nothing looks rounded anymore. :frown:

GTA3 is playable in my nForce IGP (420-D, but using it as 220-D), 16 MB shared VRAM and 112 MB RAM @ 720x576x16b res. I can play it for about 45 minutes with no trouble, but then framerate becomes unacceptable. After restating the game, everything runs perfectly for another 45 minutes.

Talk about overtweaked settings to play it lol.
I don't recall it being playable with 16MB of video RAM, I recall it would give out an error.

It gives an error message when you want to run it in a vid. card less than 16 MB vram. At first I tried to run it with 8 MB vram, then it said "GTA3 needs at least 12 MB video ram to run".

BTW, I have finished MaxPayne @ 1024x768x16bit with 8 MB VRAM. GTA3 is designed to give an error message in 8 MB cards. Otherwise I am pretty sure that it would have no problem with 8 MB vram

Forgot to ask, what the "trails" effect in GTA3? I can't turn it on? Maybe it requires 32 MB vram or a true DX8 graphics card?

No it has this probably for low refresh rates, but I am not sure. It just isn't a fun effect, does not make it more realistic or less polygonal. It blurs things and makes it dirty and muddy.

Now I am playing GTA3 wit 224 MB Ram, nForce IGP @ 128bit mode, 32 MB shared VRAM. It's completely playable at 1024 x 768 x 16bit. And now it doesn't lag after playing some time.
