I rebuilt a homebuilt (Abit BX6R2 w/ PIII 700 MHz) to function as a music server. I had two identical 80 GB Seagates, so I picked up an ATA 133 / RAID PCI controller card. The system works fine w/ stripping RAID; however, I'd like to add third hard drive (non-RAID). I threw an old Maxtor 80 GB in and ran it off an ATA 100 PCI controller card. Now, the PC is looking at the single Maxtor as the boot disk (BOOT DISK FAILURE after Verifying DMI Pool Data) instead of the RAID, as it did prior to adding the single drive. Here's what I see as the IDE controllers come up.

(Mobo: ABIT BX6R2)
Award BIOS
04/26/2000-i440BX-W977-2A69KA1JC-QR
IDE Primary Master
IDE Primary Slave
IDE Secondary Master
IDE Secondary Slave BCD-44x CD-ROM

(ATA100 Controller Card)
Ultra100TX2 BIOS 2.20.0.15
D0 Not Detected
D1 DVD-ROM
D2 Not Detected
D3 Maxtor 4R080L0 LBA 76 GB Ultra DMA 5 <-Jumper in Slave Position

(ATA133 Controller Card)
IT8212 RAID BIOS V1.7.1.94 F/W ver 02093030
Drive 0 ST380021A Array 0 RAID 0
Drive 1 Not Detected
Drive 2 ST380021A Array 0 RAID 0
Drive 3 Not Detected

I've tried every Boot Sequence the Abit/Promise BIOS has:
A,SCSI,C
LS/ZIP,C
A,C,SCSI
C,A,SCSI
C,CDROM,A
CDROM,C,A
D,A,SCSI
E,A,SCSI
F,A,SCSI
SCSI,A,C
SCSI,C,A

It will work, again, if I disconnect the Maxtor. Any ideas how to get the system tp keep using the RAID as the boot disk? Thanks in advance

... your not trying to boot off the controller card are you?

I'd put the maxtor drive on the mobo's secodary port, and the optical on the primary, and set the boot sequence as cd-rom, scsi. It's the SCSI setting that boots from the controller card. You have two controller cards of different brands and types... most mobo BIOSes can't handle that many boot roms!

If your definitely wanting to run your RAID 0 and another one or two drives, I would suggest the HighPoint Rocket RAID 454. I own this 4 channel RAID card, and do exactly what you propose. Channels one and two have the RAID 0 array, and channels 3 and 4 have a single hdd each. I could in theory have 4 drives on the latter two channels, RAID 1+0, or 8 single HDDs!

I've been successfully booting off the 133 RAID controller. Its only when I introduce the extra HD on the 100 controller that I run into trouble. I guess I can just convert the extra HD into an external drive with a kit.

Thanks! I'll give it a shot; although I seem to remember the reason that in this computer's prior iteration (my main machine), I had to go with the 100 ATA controller as the BIOS/Mobo wouldn't recognize a hard drive that big. But I'll give it a shot now that its no longer the boot drive.

Never gave it a thought about how old that board is! probably has either a 32 or ~130GB limit.

You can run a RAID 0 on the RAID card, possibly putting your Maxtor as a "slave" on one of the channels. You may want to check the documentation for the card. You'll have degradation of RAID array speed if reading/writing to the Maxtor and the same to the RAID array.

I have located the supposedly latest driver and manual for your card, you can find it HERE. Looks like a generic "Silicon Image SiI 0680 Ultra-133 Medley ATA Raid Controller", which means you may be able to find a more up to date BIOS/driver for the card on the SI website. I see nothing stopping you from using the Maxtor on this card, just make sure you don't assign it to an array or as a spare. To do this, you will need to manualy desiginate and create the array and chunk size (try using a minimum of 16KB).

Good Luck!

Thanks ProHandyman and Copenhagenlc! I'm booting to SCSI first via the Mobo BIOS, and the old Maxtor is connected to the Mobo IDE channels. XP recognizes it as a 76GB; so I can pull the ATA100 PCI card and use it elsewhere, and free up a PCI slot. Thanks again.
