there isnt a max size as such

the largest cards on sale at the minute are around 2 gig.

If I could hazard a guess, I would say 4GB as that is where FAT16
partitions stop. Since 1GB is the largest commonly available and 4GB
SD cards aren't even for sale, there should be no problem. Ditto MMC.
