I am trying several distros of linux and am having trouble creating a live cd. I downloaded the isos of ubuntu and another distro and burned them to a cd, restarted and nothing, just windows. I have a 2 year old knoppix official live cd that boots halfway fine (before being unable to continue due to scratches). And, by Isos are ok because they boot in qemu.

Two quick questions here:

1) Did you make sure to burn the isos as an image file and not just burn the .iso file to a cd? Open the cd and make sure there's a file structure there.

2) Did you make sure to set your PC's BIOS to boot from CD?

1) I also tried using cdburnerxp pro as suggested by the ubuntu site. No luck
2) Yes, I set the boot order correctly because my old knoppix cd worked

Right, sorry I missed that part about the old Knoppix disc. If they're burned properly (which it sounds like you have) and the BIOS is set to boot from cd before any hard disks (which you've done) I am at a loss here.

Try to boot it on a spare/friends machine to ensure the burn is good is the next thing I'd suggest.

the other thing is that when i look at the contents of the knoppix live cd, there is a flurry of other files other than the iso many of which are named live cd and the such.

Ummm, wait what? Can you be a little more specific or post a screenshot?

in the main directory there is a 680 mb file that would presumably be the iso, but it is called livecd (clipboard clip)
here are the rest of the files:
boot (security catalogue)
initrd (winrar)
isolinux (BIN)
isolinux (CFG)
livecd (MSG)
livecd (LSS)
mediacheck (unknown)
vmlinuz

Those are the other files all of which are in a folder called isolinux (parenthases indicate filetype)

Hmm, it seems like that's not right, but I'm going to download the ubuntu livecd and check it out. Something seems out of place there, but maybe the livecd file is the compressed stuff needed for the livecd environment.

Yeah, the layout of Ubuntu is much different from what you posted.

ISORecorder may work better

http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com [...] rV2RC1.msi

http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/HowTo.htm

Or if you have access to a Linux box:

vmlinuz is the linux kernel btw and initrd is the initial RAMDisk

Yes, I followed those steps. The reason those files are different is because those files I posted are for my knoppix live cd that worked. My ubuntu simply has the iso file in it.

Then it was not recorded properly by the software.

Please use ISOrecorder, a Linux CDRecording tool or make sure your recording software is set to record the ISO image to the CD as an image instead of just burning the data file onto the CD.

Reply to linux_0

Yeah, if there's just the ISO then it hasn't been recorded properly

Download and use MagicISO, u can download it as a trial....
mount the ISO image and just click Burn It!
If u use something like Nero or what not, u open nero, go to Recorder>Burn Image...Mount the ISO and Burn!
If u do that and that doesnt work, then u have either a Bad cd problem, lol, or u are in a deep need for a new computer...lol..

Hope this helps

i tried again using cdburnerxp and it boots into linux now, but it is so messed up. (ununtu) there is no text next to any icons and nothing works, no programs start or anything, it is completely useless. what is the problem now

Reply to goorioles747

How much Memory are u running?
Linux live distros need at least 256 MB i believe....
If u have 2 drives, try puttin the CD in the other drive and reboot. Remember to make that drive Start up first in the bios

Reply to A1e3m

That is very odd. I would re-download the iso and the md5 checksum and verify the image. You can verify the image with this method.

Also, what are the system specifics? There may be some poorly supported/not supported hardware in your system causing these issues.
