ok, heres my question:

right now my pc does not have a legal copy of windows xp pro as my friend that helped me build the computer must have used a fake product key or whatever. so now i always get these prompts to purchase a new cd key. now i need to get a copy of windows because i am going to install a new mobo, and ive read its best to just do a fresh install of windows when doing this. anyway i don't ever use any of the pro stuff so i just want to get the basic xp, so i am just wondering how i can get rid of the pro stuff and just be able to buy and use a basic xp key. or i guess if it would work to just use a basic xp key and still keep the pro stuff would be fine too. thanks ahead of time for any info, i appreciate it.

an xp home key will not work on xp pro. Your best bet is to get a legal copy of xp home and reinstall the os after the new motherboard is installed.

Get on NewEgg and buy an OEM Windows XP Home Edition, its pretty cheap.

Thats what i am planning on doing but i was reading that you have to enter the same cd key for the windows that is already on the pc, so i just wanted to make sure i wouldnt run into trouble if i tried to enter a new cd key.
