Tom's Hardware SOLD......serious $$

Forum Systems : Homebuilt Tom's Hardware SOLD......serious $$

Word :    Username :

Seeing as I mostly hang out here in the Homebuilt section, thought I'd mention it here:

Seems Tom's Hardware is in the process of, or has just been, SOLD.

And no chump change either.....$15 to $20 MILLION is the purported number. 8O

Seeing as the VAST majority of people visit Toms for the forums, not necessarily just simply the articles, I would venture that most of us regulars here have therefore contributed as well to that $15M+ value. WOW. Just wow.

Ya think maybe Omid Rahmat, CEO of Tom's Publishing, might buy us lunch or something for boosting the traffic here (and therefore value) of his company????????????

You want a cut from that money? :P

Well, I'm a loyal fan of Tom's and been here long before I was a member. I just hope this will be better for the site.

I'd take a free lunch.

I just hope the site improves after the sale.... It's all been said before.

The link is on Tom's front page. It starts here, follow it through.

And please DON'T go on some rant about the Inquirer. In this one instance, they received confirmation of the info from Tom's publisher himself. This isn't a rumor, regardless of what people think of the Inquirer.

Damn, there was another link to substantiate, and it seems to be gone.....or else I've lost it. Sorry.

There are a couple of threads around the forums about it.

Well, as long as things continue and/or improve, then that's great.

I just thought I'd take the "What If" philosophical approach for a minute and ask what this place would be without the people that support it for FREE ;)

LOL. Lunch a couple hundred ways.......that still leaves...oh....about $15M +

I hope this site will not be turned into a more of an advertisement billboard.

It’s no doubt that Toms Hardware is a hot Commodity or more a more suitable statement (hot community)
We can only hope that this site will shine for another ten years.

Yeah. $15-$20M doesn't come from a "community" of enthusiasts and techies. It comes from sponsorship and advertising dollars. Period.

I've not been year for years.....though I was a lurker long before I ever made my first post......BUT, it seems that the appeal and help here somehow transformed into a bit of a sideshow that went "mainstream" to the masses. Could just be me though, but as I post in these forums everyday I am inundated with this sense of "corporate" around here......even just looking at the right-hand side of this page as I type and you will see what I mean. Seems to have lost its charm......such a shame.

As with most things that get "well known", it can often lose its essence in trying to become more "accessible".

Oh well.

Last time I built a computer, I read the Tom's site for days and found pretty much all the information I needed (this was probably 6-8 years ago).

This time, I read Tom's and went on looking as the information just wasn't there (what was there was well-done but the breadth of info was non-existent). These forums ended up being where I found alot of my information - it's too bad when the "pro" sites end up being less useful than the forums.

What corporate to the right? Oh, I suppose I need to disable Adblock and some other Firefox addons to see it. :P

so i knew about the sale stuff... does this sale mean that Omid is now the CEO or Omid is SELLING it...? as in, who is the grand pubah now?

Selling.

Sounds like it's a complete sell, not a merger or acquisition.....which would mean he's gone and enjoying his retirement......unless the new guys wanna keep him for "continuity".......

Yeah, but the market is bigger and more diversified now. This isn't a shock.

God, deciding on a chipset is hard enough. Then there's many boards per chipset, loads of new features, interfaces etc.

LOL.

I suppose........given the choice, most of us would sell for MEEEELIONS :)

Besides, he can always take his money and run, and go start a new site devoted to non-commercial, non-advertised advice and help LMAO. Get the best of both worlds. Already got the money, now go make a site that doesn't need all the advertisements, etc and focus on hardcore help and unbiased, hard-hitting reviews that don't need to pander to the sponsors ;)
