Okay, I think I have my new setup figured out for HD *and* PiP. I'll have
to upgrade the receiver to one with 3 component/digital inputs - no big
deal.
I'll also have to upgrade to HD Dish Network, mainly to get a better
receiver with component and digital outputs - everything else it brings
is gravy.
I've read the Dish 811 receiver product sheet and a couple of things just
aren't clear. Answers from anyone who has them appreciated.
1) Is the digital audio connection sufficient for *all* audio - will
regular sat channel audio etc. pass through this connection? Or do I have
to port the AV audio to the receiver in parallel?
2) What the &^%$@# are the AV inputs for? Just convenience for consumers
who want to connect their VCR and DVD through this receiver? Does the 811
convert those inputs to S-video or component?
3) I have Dish 500 service - do I have to change out my antenna to
upgrade to HD service? Can I use my existing antenna if I want to pass on
HD channels for the time being?
Thanks!

Relax. The digital output handles *all* audio.

Can't answer this one for you. Maybe someone else will.

You'll get all Dish HD except CBS, which you may or may not qualify for. If you
qualify for CBS, you'll need a second dish aimed at 61.5 or 148. An old 300
will do. If you can get network HD OTA, then 500 will give you everything else.

'K, thanks. Sometimes there are limitations on the digital links - such
as the inability of DVD-A or SACD to use anyting but analog line-level
connections.

I suspect they're useless except for Aunt Mamie to plug in her VCR, but
who knows - they might have a function.

I don't much care about general broadcast TV (either OTA or sat/cable),
but I might stick up an antenna to look at the HDTV broadcasts, since the
811 has the capability. Watching broadcast krap in HD doesn't make it any
more appealing to me.
Thanks. Dish 811 and Denon 2105 on the way to make it all happen.
