I am looking to but a direct view CRT HDTV ( 26" -32" ) for about $700
more or less . I see models from Samsung , Philips , Sanyo , Advent(
is this generic ?) and Toshiba .Are any of these worth getting ? I am
open to recommendations . I like the descriptions for Samsung and
Sanyo because they have tuners . But how good is the Picture ? Thanks
.. Bernie

Bernie:
On the low end of HDTV sets/monitors, you get what you pay for....
My lowest $$ selection available is a Toshiba 30HF84 ($899) with
a $198 Walmart external digital tuner.... has good quality..
When you ask about picture quality......
You must consider BOTH 16:9 HiDef pictures AND
4:3 analog picture upconverts to Digital....
For pure HD pictures the less expensive HD set may pass OK
but for 4:3 analog to digital conversion pictures can
be 'junk' or very poor...... This is one pit fall..
The difference between a lesser HD set and Better HD set...
Lies in the lesser software guts in the cheaper Digital Tvs....
Some can clean up analog pictures and others do it
poorly....
SEcond difference is durability & service nightmares...
Some HD sets are more robust (fewer failures) & much
easier to service (have available parts & well
trained service people)........
I bet an honest salesman knows the 'problem HD sets'...
It's like pay me now or pay me later.... & have a poor
picture on 4:3 programs...
Buying a $1100 setup now with external digital tuner
is the way to go...
I happen tobe a Sony CRT (direct view) fan for 1 year
and own a Sony 34" 34HS510 with a Samsung Tuner T-151
and have a Samsung T-451 Digital tuner on order.
PS: At this time good HD Sets under 30" diagonal are
far and few between.... In my opinion..

I was impressed with a Panasonic wide screen CRT (30 or 32"?) that I
believe had built-in HDTV tuner. Its picture was very sharp and clear
compaired with other CRTs. Unfortunately its screen appeared to be very
shiny with NO anti-glare coating, so lights in the room or window behind
you during daytime could be a problem.
This is in contrast to my Pansonic CRT PC monitor which at time of
purchase long ago seemed to have better anti-glare coating than most. It
has an excellent picture for OTA HDTV with a set top box, except for its
small size (17" ). I am still undecided what type of wide screen to get,
but will not make that decision until I pay off my credit cards. So for
now my OTA HDTV outputs to an old Panasonic 20" TV (better than analog
ever was).

The current Sony direct view sets provide the best HDTV picture, by far.

Sony's xxHS420 line looks good to me.
How far is not so important to me.
The only one I really liked was the $20,000 display XBR 61" plasma,
but I guess we'll have to wait ten years for that stuff.

May want to consider the repair records of each company for their products
then decide. Toshiba and Sanyo have fewer repairs on average than Samsung,
Advent reminds me of a video game company??

Sometime these are the actual parent companies and/or factories
deciding to get a product on the market with "their" name on it instead
of a re-branded product.
LG been a long time factory/parent and now is a major "name" on the
retail scene.

Maybe not appropo to a discussion of TV sets, but we bought an LG window air
conditioner from Home Depot and had to take it back. LG had built the inner
air ducting system out of some kind of plastic foam that looked like
styrofoam. When the AC cooled down or heated up, the plastic foam inside it
contracted and expanded and creaked, all night long. Drove us nuts.
After we took it back, we found a Kenmore AC at Sears, made by some company
unknown but certainly not LG, since the interior was all hard plastic and
metal. No creaking. In fact, much better quality overall for about $40
more.
Can't fault Home Depot on their return policy, though. They made the
process easy and pleasant.
This is not to say that a bad AC means a bad TV. More a comment on the fact
that when someone gets a bad product from a company, he or she won't buy
from that company in the future and will bad-mouth them for the bad product.
Pays to make good products. Bottom line, you have to hope LG's TV sets are
better than their air conditioners.

I've had the Sanyo HT30744 Tv for 3 days now and am quite happy with
it. The TV itself is really too big for my computer room (12x12) and
the picture tube really shows the imperfections in digital cable and
dvds at close range (like 6ft.) but for $649 I'm not complaining!
