Tom’s Hardware Guide and its parent company TG Publishing have been sold to an undisclosed buyer for an undisclosed price. The deal will close later this month, said Omid Rahmat, CEO of Tom’s Publishing, in a letter to the Inquirer. The rumored price, however, is $15-$20 million.

Tom’s Hardware is an established news site for tech professionals that most geeks have encountered at least once - the network of sites (including versions in different countries - a total of 12 editions worldwide) reports 50M monthly pageviews and 5M unique monthly visitors.

PaidContent speculates that French B2B tech media company BestofMedia Group may be the buyer. The network was founded in 1996 by German Thomas Pabst, and the first site targeted a US audience. With those stats, it’s still a strong rival to modern tech blogs.

Way before this news was out, we were discussing what happened to THG. I had speculated there was a deal done, with a change in management. Clearly evident.

nothing quite like the well-respected independent selling out to corporate america...well it was apparent something was going on with the bad changes THG has made over the past year but for such a paltry sum? you couldn't find someone to buy your soul for more? oh that's right...THG has degraded over the years to what it is today and as such its not worth the server it runs on.

good luck sell-outs, thanks for ruining what was once the pinnacle of tech websites. hope that cool 15mil keeps you warm at night knowing how many people now curse your name for being such n00bish wannabe's that at the first hint of a windfall you roll over and become corporate america's bitch.

Yea, I didn't mind that much when the ads were in between posts, but when you have text wrapping around the ads, it really sucks.

Sadly for those bemoaning the quality of Toms Hardware, this changing of guard will do nothing to "improve" the quality of the articles or change the color scheme of the main portal.

Clarification: This is my opinion. Deal with it. =p

Now com'on guys - hang in there. Its not time to throw in the towel just yet. We still have the forumz. Honestly, thats the only reason I come to this site anymore. Hopefully someone will read this crap and decide to do something about it. I JUST KNEW IT WAS A BUYOUT!

in my anger i only assumed THG had some measure of dignity to sell out to americans...but no, they went with the french...maybe we can get some articles on SELLING NUCLEAR REACTORS TO IDIOT RADICAL MUSLIM DICTATORS IN THE MIDDLE EAST...that would fall in line with both parties, THG selling out to the french and the french selling out to Iran...see a trend here?

THG devient le site d’Internet des gens qui retourne leur vestes maintenant...merci d'avoir vendu vos âmes pour absolument rien de tout...cet espèce de saloperie va être jamais oublié !

Reply to jrnyfan

I never said anything about giving up. Its just that I don't share the same viewpoint as the rest of the forum on a few of these issues, but I don't necessarily disagree with them either.

Actually, I talked to some employees and then told me the number was sub-$5 million. And the CEO (at least of US operations) Omid was thrown out on his a$$. Total embarrassment.

Omid was in charge of the new designs....

THG is entertaining, but its reviews [and articles] carry as much value as an Inq story. They're entertaining, but you take them with a grain of salt.

I stick to Anandtech for anything I take seriously. If not for the forums, I'm not sure I'd even check THG.

On a side-note, I wonder how much of that traffic is a result of (1) Google news redirects to TGDaily and (2) the forums. My money is on the better half of 50%.

Well it appears that many of us were correct, the site was for sale. What's funny is not a single rumor broke, yet we all had a pretty good idea that it was happening.

Back on March 29th, I had this to say about the site:

Quote :

Oh absolutely. But the question remains: does Omid want to make money or does he want to deliver a valuble and worthy product.

In my professional opinion, if you focus on the later the money will come. It just takes time.

Omid probably wants to make a quick profit off this site. In that case, building up add revenue and hits is the primary concern, not the content. (Though, you still need to have decent content.)

Some day you kids will grow up and learn that Corporations are good for making new toys and aren't the evil things that Socialists have been yakking about since the days of Karl Marx.

In the mean time.....it probably would have been better for the quality of THG to have been sold out to an American Corp. Sadly Due to the French legal system THG is going to be pretty bland.

The French are very concervative and they might even start limiting the "content" in the forumz. Still cant believe THG removed my BOOTH BABE of the month suggestion.

But listen, how can you guys hate Omid for selling out. It's just business. You would have done the same if you were in his shoes. He could use the money to start up his own gig once his non-compete expires, maybe in a year or so. Have more freedom to explore more compelling ideas. It was a wise decision, but unfortunately guys like you and me will be harmed. The only way to force change of content is to just get bored of this site and stop visiting. Check in once a month or so to see if anything they write is interesting. I would say channel your anger to Anandtech, and get them to support a scrolling forumz site. That way there will be a mass exodus, forcing the new owners to step up or ship out. Its the free market. As long as we keep coming here, nothing will change.

I for one would like to welcome our new lizard overlords from Mars, and wish to state that I am fully behind their plans to turn Tom's Hardware Guide into a shoe factory.

Come on, get real, going ballistic because of the nationality of a company buying out another company is silly. For one, TG Publishing would be ruled by the laws of the country of the subsidiary - so even if (if) TGP were bought by a French company, TGP LLC would be governed by US laws, TGP AG by German laws etc, as it has always been.

I think that wild speculation about what would happen after a sale is folly, particularly when you couldn't even say for certain what the conditions of the sale were, or to whom.

Reply to Aaron McKenna

Amongst other things, I'm mostly a consumer. I look forward to tests and reviews of current hardware, and also informed previews of what is coming up.

I stuck to Toms because of these needs, and have been viewing the site for years. However in the last 12 months, like a lot of others here, I'm finding my news elsewhere quicker and in more detail. I'm not talknig about fud sites or Inquirer-esque articles, just other hardware enthusiast sites.

Yes, the forum is still ok, but not special. It's ok for people who have been here for a while but for a new member just joining and asking what to many may appear to be a silly question, it's a nightmare, 3/4 of the forum population treat them like crap and they're gone before the other 1/4 give them decent advice and answers - very few new people will stay.

Nobody new comes here for the forums though, it's the reviews and previews. Forget the news, everyone has it.

If it's to remain an enthusiast site, get the inside track. Take that ATI engineer out, forcefeed him / her with Tequila until you get that R600 back to the lab. Personally, I don't mind all the other articles you write as long as the core PC hardware principle is stuck to. If the focus is changing, just say. But the key is:

STAY UP TO DATE!

Too often, we're arriving here on the forums discussing a review or benchmark uploaded somewhere else. I can get an RSS feed or 100 for that, so get back on the ball.
