Forum Linux/Free BSD : General Discussion help with samba + workgroups

I'm running samba + swat.

when I go to smb://workgroup I see my computer name, but it's only a file with no extension. Clicking it states "The file name UBUNTUBOX indicates that this file is of type "desktop configuration file"."

Doing smb://workgroup/computer just opens up the text file with [code:1:9fb224795e][Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=UBUNTUBOX
Type=Link
URL=smb://UBUNTUBOX/
Icon=gnome-fs-server
[/code:1:9fb224795e]
Looks right, but it doesn't link to it.

If I do smb://192.168.1.3 or smb://UBUNTUBOX/ it works fine.

This is my config file [code:1:9fb224795e] [global]

workgroup = workgroup
netbios name = UBUNTUBOX
interfaces = lo, eth0
bind interfaces only = true
server string = UbuntuBox Samba Server
announce version = 5.0
socket options = TCP_NODELAY IPTOS_LOWDELAY SO_KEEPALIVE SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192
smb passwd file = /etc/smbpasswd
encrypt passwords = yes

wins support = yes

passdb backend = tdbsam
security = user
null passwords = true
username map = /etc/samba/smbusers
name resolve order = hosts wins bcast

[media]

path = /home/samba/
browseable = yes
guest ok = yes
available = yes
public = yes
writable = no

[private]

This sounds less to be an issue with SAMBA and more an issue with the MIME layer of Gnome. What distro and version (of the distro, gnome, gnome-mime-data, and samba) are you using?

Doing a quick search on your problems revealed several possible solutions that were all different and ranged from just updating SAMBA to completely reinstalling.

I get the same thing with firefox and my xbox (using xbmc).

Ubuntu 6.06
gnome 2.14.2
samba 3.0.22
gnome-mine-data 2.4.2-1

I just verified with my system, here's what mine looks like:

A simply config'd Gentoo system as the SAMBA server (3.0.14a-r2)
smb.conf:[code:1:4dc5d4267f]#Global settings

workgroup = LANTASTIC
netbios name = THE-UBERBEAST
encrypt passwords = yes

[media]
path = /mnt/media
browseable = yes
read only = yes
guest ok = yes[/code:1:4dc5d4267f]

On both my laptop (basically same versions you have with Ubuntu save Gnome is 2.13) no problem accessing it through nautillus in either manner.

On my desktop under a VMware'd Ubuntu 6.06 with identical versions as yours, can also access through nautillus without issue.

Perhaps try a different (new or older) version of SAMBA. That and start small with a very simple config and move on from that.

update Also test server with a Win2K box and Win XP Pro, also no issues.
