Ready to buy after researching the Samsung's HLP5685W, but wife doesn't like
the stand. Can't find any information saying you can use a non pedestal
stand only a few posts that say you have no choice. Thanks for any info.

The stand contains all the electronics. The screen is just that, a screen
like a movie screen.

I don't think that you can use a different stand with the pedestal TVs,
but there is a whole thread on Samsung DLPs at the AVS forums:

Wait a month or so... Samsung is _supposed_ to be introducing the 5674
Tantus model which is basically the same set in a regular tabletop
configuration.
