Can anyone tell me if the local Best Buy or Circuit City stores will
dicker on prices for high-end HDTV units??? The web prices they show
are pretty much the same as the manufacturer. If I go to the store,
will I find it possible to negotiate the price down significantly???

Why don't you just try it and see what happens? First-hand experience
is always best.

Recent experience with Ultimate Electronics, Sears & a local appliance store
taught me that they would ALL dicker seriously, to the tune of hundreds of
dollars, on the price for an expensive HDTV.
Dicker at every store and get them to write down their price offer. If you
want, in the end, you can take the best offer you get to Sears and they will
match it plus 10% of the difference between that offer and their price.
TV's -- expensive ones at least -- are getting like cars -- knowledgeable
people don't pay the sticker price.

it does not appear that Sears sells the one I want... the 70" Sony XBR

Sears might not have it in stock, but I believe they sell Sony sets. Go
ask.
70" ! How big a viewing room do you have? 42" screen is more than big
enough in my 18 by 14 foot rec room.

More than big enough? That would be something like saying that the
250 hp in my car should be more than enough, or that C cups should be
plenty, etc...
Hey, my 70" XBR is a fabulous TV...can't imagine having to 'slum it'
with something like a 42" tv...
<tongue in cheek through much of that by the way...although I do love
my 70" XBR, and recommend it to anyone who can squeeze it in. My room

When I bought my Sony KDF-60XS955 from them, they did not carry it in stock
but it was on a list of TV's they could get. The price on the list was
about $400 under Sony's web price. I offered $300 less than that, which
they accepted plus another $50 off and then took another $400 off later when
they were 4 days late in delivering. So, I think you might drop into a
large Sears store with a good Sony display and ask if they could get it for
you. And dicker on the price.

I visited the Sears store today. They told me they do not carry the
Sony XBR series. Since I was looking for the 70" XBR, Sears no longer
was an option.

I did some driving today and visited some stores in search for a deal
on the Sony 70" XBR.
For reference, Amazon has the price at about $5200. Add about $500 for
shipping/delivery and no sales tax = $5700
Sears (Woodfield): "We do not carry the Sony XBR series"
ABT: best price $6090. Shipping/delivery free. Tax $502 = $6592
Best Buy (Woodfield area): "We do not carry the 70" .... how about a
60"?"
Circuit City (Woodfield): Quoted $6999 and I kept asking for "their
price" and he did not want to tell me anything other than "we price
match". I showed him the ABT price and he said "we can do that if that
is a valid price from ABT". Shipping is $40 tax $533 = $6663
BUT... CC had an open box special.... for $5499. He claimed it had
only been on display for 10 days and comes with full warranty. This is
tempting would end up $6020
A plus is CC had the demo on a very nice stand.... I like it better
than the Sony and it cost $299.99 (Techcraft, I think it was).

Sears owned Great Indoors carries the Sony XBR's including the 70" RP LCD

A fellow I know here in Austin who runs an appliance store that specializes
in Sony TV's told me that he thinks Sony is purposely phasing out the XBR
models in favor of the 60 and 55 inch XS955 series. Buyers and even
salespeople have had trouble justifying the significantly higher prices for
the XBR's when, in the store displays at least, the XBR pictures don't
usually appear to be any better than those on the other models.

the only 70" is in the XBR
Any thoughts of whether they will bring out a 70" in the XS model
line??

None. I have no way of knowing. But the guy I know who runs the appliance
store thinks that Sony is purposely phasing out the XBR line in favor of the
XS models.

Sears will also beat on-line prices (as long as you include shipping
charges).
