I'm trying to connect a HP Designjet 4200 Scanner to the company Network. These scanners are used to scan large maps and have their own verison of Microsoft's O.S. In this case it's running 2000...

To cut to the point I just cannot get this thing to register on the domain. What is odd is I can ping other computers on the network and can even ping the scanner from another computer. Everything checks out O.K. but what it comes time to register it just gives me a DNS registration error which may be caused by DNS lookup. I can ping the DNS server fine and vice versa....

I'm totally confused as to how all IP address have been assiged and are showing up correctly in IPconfig, I can ping computers on the company network, but cannot register it on the domain. Any helpful advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

I am not 100% sure what you are trying to do there but to give you some possible options.

1. You could install ethereal http://www.ethereal.com/ on a computer and then monitor the data to/from the scanner to see exactly what is going on there. This is very useful if you understand the Tcp/ip, if you have some basic knowledge you may be able to figure it out anyway.

*Not that if you are not the senior tech then you should ask permission before running a sniffer.

2. Also you can force DNS resolution by editing the host file using Notepad.
Usually located in
Windows XP = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2K = C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Win 98\ME = C:\WINDOWS

Adding
123.123.123.123 www.yourdomainname.com
to the file will cause any request to www.yourdomainname.com to resolve to 123.123.123.123, and no DNS servers will be involved.

Not sure if any of that helps, but thought I would put it out there as tools to maybe use on the problem.
