Seeking advice from happy owners. Once the price on the q6600 drops to $530 I'm planning to buy one and am torn between these two chipsets. I'm not planning to run SLI cards, probably just a single 8600 or 8800. I'd also like to run the q6600 @ 3.0 GHz @ 9x333 if the temps will be manageable cooled on air (probably a thermalright ultra-120).

Anyway, I've had good luck w/ Asus boards in the past and am torn between the P5B-Del and the P5N-series. Anyone point to reasons why one over the other? I believe the P5N officially supports 1333 MHz fsb, but beyond that I dunno why one over the other.

Also, I'm not locked into Asus; if there is another recommendation people have, I'll certainly look into it.

Thanks!

Have not looked into the N board, But I am pleased with my P5B Deluxe WiFi mobo... It easily runs 9x334MHz on my E6600 with Corsair XMS2 RAM.

Oh, and that is using timings of 3-3-3-8 at 334MHz!

I've read some threads in here about the lower quality of the nvidia 650 in terms of NB and SB getting pretty hot. Can anyone comment on this vs. the intel p965 based board?

Reply to graysky

965 seems to run higher fsb with quads than nVidia 650i/680i e.g. AB9 QuadGT, P5B deluxe willl do 450fsb.

Have a look at the P5B-E plus, I like the idea of the solid caps, it's a mobo that should last forever.

Reply to jamesgoddard

they use Conductive Polymer Aluminium rather than a dielectric solution so they should last longer.

ASUS P5B DELUXE all the way. I love this board!!!!!!!

Does your board experience that sound cross talk issues that's circulating around the net (i.e. you hear system noise through the speakers like disk activity, random pops/clicks, etc.)?

Reply to graysky

Nope, not after the new drivers. Optical to Z5500's sweet sound.

OH MY GOD PM ME EVERYTHING YOU DID TO GET THAT!

Are you watercooling for those temps? I can't believe 3.5ghz on a zalman!
PLEASE PM ME ALL YOUR BIOS STATS!

I want to overclock a Q6600 like that but the default/setxFSB is a killer. You theoretically have that thing running at 643FSB. That's crap. I'm totally buying a P5B-D...

What's a Z5500? The onboard audio chip or..?

I don't use water cooling at all. This link helped me a ton with my first ever Intel build since 1995, all I have ever used was AMD, you really have to have a case with very good air flow to get these temps.

There a 5.1 surround system. They have a optical, coax and analog connections.

that's an E6600 though not a quad.
For 1 the quad will generate a lot more heat with 4 cores at 3.6 than 2 ...

& a QuadGT will do that on the 1067 strap whereas unless he clockgen'ed up from under 400fsb the P5B will be on the 1333
Nice memory though, 4-4-4- @ DDR2 1000 8)

That is excellent...

Bastion, thats awesome. Plz post your settings for the BIOS in here so I can take a look. Also, what RAM are you using? HTF are you getting temps so low?

That link got me started, I followed all the instructions to a "T".

The memory is the key, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820145169 CORSAIR Dominator 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1142 (PC2 9136).

CPU-F = 500
DRAM-F = DDR2- 1000Mhz
PCI-E F = 100
PCI SYNC = 33.33
SPEED SPECTRUM = Disabled
MEM-V = 2.10
CPU VCORE = 1.500
FSB-TERM = 1.3
NB VCORE = 1.45
SB VCORE = 1.50
ICH = AUTO
------------------------------------
CPU CONFIG

only 3 I have ENABLED , the rest are disabled.

Modify Ratio support = ENABLED (7-8-9)
CPU TM Function = ENABLED
Execute Disable Bit = ENABLED

The case I have helps a ton, my temps at 3.5 setting was to high about 40c idle and 64c load so I ran at 3.2. Then I got this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6811999164 and changed my case fans as well.

3 x 80mm areo cool 40 cfm each = 120 cfm exaust.
2 x 120mm areo cool 70 cfm each = 140 cfm intake.

Now with the new fans, the CPU idles at 34c and under orthos after 4 hours it never gets above 55c to 57c, keep in mind these temps are from ASUS Probe II. The reason I used ASUS Probe II is that was the highest of any temp of any software I used so I used that to keep on the safe side. TAT is always about 10c cooler.

In the screenshot you're running at 3.5Ghz around 28C idle. What does that do at load (temps)? That RAM is pricey!

The p965 can easily do 333mhz. I personally think the p965 is more mature than the 600i series and the south bridge is impressive.
