Audio CDs will not play

I have 2 cd drives and neither of them will play a audio cd. All other formats work. Music and sound work fine on my computer. No audio program will read the cd. The cd also lists itself as emtpy in my computer. I made the mistake of deleting codecs in the audio codecs tab of device manager. I believe the missing codec is the "Windows Media audio codec". This is the only codec i do not have that my friends do. I have a different called the microsoft audio codec version 1. Is this my problem or is there is there something else. I have tried the WMA V9 codecs and reinstalling Windows Media Player 10.
