Just built my system today, have a question about CPU temperature and wondering if it is a flaw. So far I ahve noticed the temperature of the CPU doesnt change at all, im not running it overclock yet but i saw the temperature remained constatnt at a 28-33 C level. I been idling comp at 30 C and then running HL2 with max settings and the cpu temp afterrunning game for 2 hrs was 33 C. I am wondering if this is aflaw since the temp from idle and not idle is too close.

I am using a Zalman heatsink/fan, the big copper ones with fan facing the sides. and artic sivler 5 as the thermal paste. wondering if this is normal or the mobo temp tester is wrong...thanks

Specs are:

E6300 @ 1.86 GHz
Gigabyte S2 Mobo
GSkill DDR533 1 GB RAM
Geforce 7900GS 258 MB
430 Watt Power Supply
Zalman 9500 Heatsink/Fan
Artic Silver 5 thermal paste

Using the onboard CPU temp detector. Its staying at 30-33C no matter what I was running (apps or games). Wondering if this is normal?

Thanks

Those temps would be corect for a single core A64 35 or 3800.
The assumption being that you are checking the temps in bios, after a restart. The norm for those chips would be ~ 39c at max load.

Ok, but which one? Can you give us the name of the program? Temps can differ wildly depending on which program you use, since different programs accuire the cpu temp different ways.

Since you have a C2D try Intel TAT or Core Temp, they use the on-die thermal sensor, so they're the most accurate. If you are using TAT or Core Temp something is probably wrong with the thermal sensor on the chip.

Ah, ok, that uses the temp sensor on the mobo. Something is probably wrong with the it, those load temps are too low for a 9500, and I've never seen a delta of only 5ºc between idle and load when using air cooling. Try a program that uses the on-die sensor like the ones I mentioned above.

Ok, I tried Core Temp and its giving me pretty much the same results, when I first opened up the computer, the temperature stays roughly around 23-25C. After an hour or two of use, the temp went up slightly to 27C. After I played HL2 on max settings (1440x900) for an hour, the temperature is not around 28-30C. Its very very low temps, either its still broken or I think the heatsink/fan is out of this world...

The mobo temp detector shows the same temp as well, roughly 1 - 2 degrees deviation.

Again, the specs are

E6300 Core 2 Duo
Zalman Heatsink/fan
Artic Silver 5
Geforce 7900GS 256
1 Gig RAM

If it's not broke, well then fix it!

I would have to say nothing is wrong with your CPU or Motherboard. I play HL2 with everything maxed out also and my CPU barely goes up 3-5c most of the time. If you are worried about it try using TaT and putting load on your Cores and see what happens. Your temp should change drastically with 100% load. Now your video card should def be getting a lot hotter running HL2. Try using TaT like i suggest and do 100% load on each core for ruffly 10mins or so and see what your temps are then then stop it.

Keep in mind that gaming doesn't require an awesome CPU therefore doesn't put it under a lot of stress. This is usually the job of the GPU (unless calculations of physics is required - even still, not that stressful for a C2D).

CPU intensive stuff usually includes things like coding/encoding and file conversions etc.

Try doing some heavily CPU intensive jobs and measure the temp again.
