Those temps are fine at that speed. What thermal paste did you use?

The Zalman STG1. I'm tempted to redo it though, not sure whether I put enough on. I turned the fan on high and now its idling at 34/37 for core0/core1

Temps are good, ambient temperature will modulate it quite a bit.  Cool nights you will see lower if the room is cool and the case has good flow through.

I idle at 25C w/ Tuniq Tower 120 E6600@3200mHz, 9700 shouldn't be that much higher
