This is probably off-topic, but does anybody know if I can get a DVR to work
without the monthly fee from the cable/satellite vendor? I realize that if I
get it to work ,I may not be able to use it to its potential.

Sure...you can buy Tivo's without going thru a sat. service. You will have
to subscribe to their tv guide service to use it's full potential, but there
are "substitutes" available on line.
