OK, right now I've got a PD 805 and a PD 945. I have a Gigabyte DS3 mobo, a TT Big Typhoon, 2 Gigs of DDR2-675 (capable of running 800), x1950pro, and an Antec Sonata.

I want to know which is faster, the OC'ed 805 or the 945 at stock speeds? (3.4GHz) The 945 will not OC very well, and heat/power consumption would be bigger than it already is. (Idles at 44C) So I'm not OCing the 945. I will attempt to OC the 805 as far as I can go, or somewhere near 3.4GHz.

I can't upgrade to C2D until the summer, so I'm stuck with these 2 PD's. My PSU is the SmartPower 450W. It is decent, and has worked for close to a year. If I left anything out please tell me!! Thanks a bunch!! :D

i have the 945 clocked to 4624 using a zalman 9700 heatsink and a DS3 board v1.0

this seams to OC very well, its set to 272 x 17 and i dont remember the voltage setting in bios, but let me know in you need more details.

this is 100% stable using dual prime for 24hrs

been running this set up for a 6 months

i have also run this at 300fsb 15x 4500mhz 100% stable

can run up to 278 FSB but the second core will fail after about 8 hrs.

Thanks alot for the reply!

I was really afraid of raising the voltages. Idiling at 39 seems kinda high. I have not done any recent load tests, but I do remember pushing 70C under load a while ago with the same parts. (different mobo though) How are your temps?

I was trying to OC without upping the voltage, and it would not boot over 210MHz. I guess I have no choice but to raise voltages. BTW, I'm looking for a FSB around 400MHz, because my memory is capable of running at those speeds. (24HRs MemTest, no errors) What do you think about 400FSB 10x. 4GHz will be my limit. I checked the PSU calculator, and a PD 950 (3.4GHz) at 4GHz and 1.3V draws 179 WATTS!!! That really scares me.

Thanks again for your response. How are your temps and voltages?

i could not get much past the 300 FSB mark on this cpu.

now i know its not the board, because i switched out to a e6300 yesterday and am stress testing 495 x 7 right now.

now my 945 had a min of 12x and a 17x max clock multiplier i dont now if your cpu has simular limits.

my max load temps were 65c, but i also noticed that when i pulled the heatsink to swap the cpu, there was no contact in the center of the cpu.

i did have to up the FSB & MCHvoltage to + 0.1 and had the CPU to 1.38

i also noticed that my system pulled about 400w using a Kill-A-Watt measuring device and with the e6300 it only pulls about 250. both under full load stress testing.

Nice overclocks. Is your 945 an ES..... regarding the unlocked multi?

Ok I did a stress test with Orthos last night, max load was 57C. I have no idea how I got into the sixties the last time I tested. Oh well!

Anyways, I did some calculations on Extreme Outervision's OC Calulator.

The PD805 at 3.5GHz will draw ~127W under load, and have a temperature of 60C
The PD945 at 4GHz will draw ~165W under load also at 60C

Case temp was 40 in both calculations. I have no idea of how temperature can be predicted without knowing the case or cooling, so I'm not going to pay attention to the temperatures.

Is the TT Big Typhoon capable of dissapating 165W of heat?? Quite hot IMO. I'm still planning to try the 10x 400FSB for 4GHz. And is the Big Typhoon also cappable of cooling the PD805 at over 3.5GHz??

Just to say stock multiplier is 17. 200x17=3400 Mhz. Do engineering samples tend to OC better?

Thanks for all the responses guys.

i dont know if its clasified as unlocked.

i have the option of running 12 to 17 x multiplier

if running 300 FSB, i can only use up to 15 x

above that i get errors.

I really don't like raising voltages, so I think that limited me. (It's at 1.325 IIRC)

But I got 4GHz! Woot!

400515x267mo7.png

The DS3 would not allow a multiplier lower than 12, so I couldn't run the 400FSB as I planned. No matter, I just picked 15. 267FSB is the slowest that would get me 4000MHz. When I have some time I will try a lower multiplier so the memory can run 1:1 closer 800MHz. Right now it's running 1066 at 5-5-5-15. Had to add .1V to make it boot though. (1.9V).

System gets about the same score in 3DMark06 (just under 5000) and scores 5722 in PCMark05, which is 700 points more than all stock!

I'm still thinking about pulling out my 805. Reading that article is so convincing! The Zalman 9500 could not cool the 805 at 4.1GHz. I think the TT Big Typhoon is slightly inferior to the Zalman, according to this. So if I use the 805 3.6 would be my absolute highest speed due to heat.

Thanks everyone for their help! Glad I got to 4GHz (Idles at 44C BTW, Stress testing tonight). Any comments or improvements I could make? Thanks a bunch!

Hmmm, everything worked great but, I started playing Battlefield 2, and got a BSOD. :x

Geez, thought I was in the clear. I was gonna run Orthos tonight for stability, but wanted to game first. Didn't get to see temps yet. Ran PCMark05 and 3DMark06 perfectly though.

Now it won't boot. Dunno why. Still troubleshooting. I'm gonna put it back at stock speeds until I figure out what happened. And before it restarted, the BSOD said something like "invalid divider". Didn't catch the whole thing, but saw in-(something) and divider. Anyone know what's up? I think it simply overheated. Thanks.

EDIT: Ooooo. I opened the case and the FINS of the Big Typhoon were warm. Not good. I think it really think it simply overheated. The 945 is essentially 2 65nm P4's on the same die. At 4GHz, it's gonna be really hot.
