I have an isp that uses 802.11b to transmit wireless within a 5 to 8 mile radius of its towers. I have had it for yrs because its all i can get up here in the hills other than dialup. I do alot of online gaming such as world of warcraft mainly and a satillite connection wouldnt help me. Normally my pings are very good in the game ranging between 1 and 250 depending on how many of my family are playing, even tho the rated connection speed is 512k max, which i have tested and verified. For the last week tho we have had a horrible time with crazy high pings and disconnections. I used a trace route / pinging progy to track down my problem and it turns out the ping spikes are between my radio on my house and their tower but they insist they have tested the connection and it must be my problem. I have ping records from two days i am going to show them today but if that dont work . i have no idea what i am going to do .
Hop Ping Time Ping Avg % Loss Pkts r/s Ping best/worst
3 2ms 2ms 0% 23417 / 23421 2ms / 1855ms
As you can see from all my trace routing and polling of the ips, the first and second hop which is my router and then radio respectively, never drop any packets and always have a low ping , but the third hop always has lost packets and the ping range is very wide, which a higher ping is ok but the range of the pings to me denotes a connection problem along with the packet loss. Maybe there is someone here who has a better grasp of this than i do but . . . im almost positive i can say with confidence its either thier radio on my house or the radio on the tower. . .
