The E6400 is 15%-20% faster than the 4200+, so it is a better choice. Anyway, right now is not a good time to buy an Intel CPU. Wait until 22nd this month, Intel will reduce their CPUs prices. For the same money you'll be able to get an E6600.
It will be at least till the 22nd before I buy anything with the price wars that are going on. I was just basing my choices on current pricing for sake of argument. I will agree the E6600 is far more sexier than the E6400, specially if it will have the E6400 pricing. 8)
I am thinking about upgrading my pc in the next few weeks. I have a Pent D 820 atm on Gigabyte GA-945GM-S2 with 2GB DDR2 667.
My upgrade choices are these:
1.) E6400 with same mobo and ram
2.) AMD X2 4200+ (AM2) with Biostar TFORCE 550 mobo and same ram.
Just wondering which is going to be the upgrade to get more performance in gaming with. I play CSS and WoW.
My current rig is Pent D 820, GA-945GM-S2, 2GB Kingston DDR2 667, 160GB SATA 2 Seagate HDD, Samsung SATA 2 DVD+-RW, EVGA 7600GT PCI-X
The E6400 is slightly faster than the x2 4200+. Now, when you consider that you already have a C2D compatable mobo, the decision is easy. Then through in some overclocking(the E6400's forte') and your system will rock. GL

Sadly this mobo does not have any overclocking options. I am not into overclocking anyway. I mainly run stock settings with a Zalman cooler for only socket 775.

That will give you x2 6000+ performance, without having to buy RAM or mobo. Nice drop-in performance, if you ask me.
get a e4300, there is a really nice option with that mobo, it is listed as "force fsb 1066" put the e4300 in, make sure it runs well, then go into the bios enable that and you'll have a much better processor. it's so easy, it's worth it too, considering the e4300 is also cheaper.

I did not find teh force fsb 1066 thing and I even used Ctrl+F1.
Seems like an open and shut case.
The e6400 is a faster processor than the 4200X2.
The e6400 is a drop in replacement on your current board, drop it in, boot it up and go, yeah kind of boring, but a great upgrade.
If you go with the 4200, you get to do all the rebuilding, reinstalling, etc. but you end up with less performance than the e6400 would have given you.
The E6400 at stock speed is 20 percent better than AMD 4200. In fact E6400 is better than 4600. You would have to buy AMD 5000 to get comparable performance, yet the E6400 can be overclocked very well (near to E6600 performance at stock clock rate) so I would buy it over all 3 of these AMD offerings.
It will be interesting to see the price drops in late April 07. I dont mind paying $300 for CPU and MB combo but atm E6600 is $300 CPU alone.

The X2 4200+ is comparable to an E6300 but can't compete with the E6400... You need a X2 5000+ to match an E6400.
Since he is obviously not going to be overclocking this thing with the GA-945GM-S2, then the 6300/6400 is certainly not a slam dunk. Still, I believe I would go with one of those (6300/6400) because you might decide you want to squeeze a 40-60% overclock out of it someday with a new motherboard. In that case, they kick X2 4200+ azz. OP might even decide to get a $115 4300 (April 23 or later) and pin-mod overclock it by 30% to 2.4Ghz. It's not guaranteed, but it could well be a great CPU/overclock and would be faster than all other options mentioned thus far.l
