I've just taken the step to HD. I have a 26" LCD 1280x768. It seems the
Comcast box will output either 720p or 1080i but not both. This is set via
a menu on the box. What is the best default? Convert the 720 to 1080 or
vice versa. The TV has more functionality in 1080.

It's debatable which one is better - people argue about it all the time.
Personally I use 1080i.
Since you have a LCD monitor, it might not make much difference which
setting you use because the monitor may do a conversion into an internal
resolution.

Interesting that a TV with a native resolution of 768 (and which converts
all input to the same, or quite likely 720) is more "functional" in 1080.

Whatever the monitor rez, it will be progressive, so I would set my box to
720p, less trouble to convert a progressive to a progressive

I don't know what box you have with Comcast. But my SA3250HD allows me to
pass through the signal and lets the TV handle the signal. Check for a
pass-through feature.

just a guess but since the native rez of lcd displays is always progressive
you might want a progressive signal goin to it, it might be able to handle
it better

That is curious isnt it? I'm no expert on scan converters but it would seem,
all LCDS being progressive that any kind of progressive would be easier to
convert
Although watching "the best of CEDA 2004 it was mentioned that 180i converts
better to 720p for some reason

Not much "debate" to it, any progressive signal is inherently better than an
interlaced signal, if for no other reason than interlacing artifacts. Not to
mention the rez of a interlaced picture drops to half whenever theres
movement. Read some of Joe Kanes stuff in wide screen review
