My brand spankin new desktop computer:

Core 2 Duo: E6600
Asus P5N32 - SLI SE deluxe
Corsair 2x1GB 800 MHz 4-4-4-12
Windows XP PRO

When I turn my computer on it POST's just fine but locks up on the Windows screen with the little loading bar on the bottom. I have to reset the computer and then it works just fine when I select, "start windows normally." If I just restart my computer when it has been in windows it works just fine. It also always takes too long on that windows screen then it should... way too long for how fast this computer is.

My experience is that XP Pro is very stable, as long as it's dealing with well-behaving hardware. So, the first thing I would do is run diagnostics on the new HDD and memory, to make sure they sent me good hardware.

Just out of curiosity, see if you can F8 into safe-mode after a cold start.

Run Chkdsk. Ungraceful restarts/shutdowns can mess up the file system.

If you already did this stuff, sorry... I'll try to think of something else.

Any suggestions as to how to check my hardware? I can always run windows in safe mode on cold boot (pressing F8) but when I restart same problem.

I scanned my HD (took forever) and it had no errors... this is so weird...

Oh and I have done a Memory test with MemTest68+ with no errors. Thank you for helping!!

Also ensure that your drivers are up-to-date and try doing a BIOS update on the motherboard.

I understand that it hangs after a cold start, unless you enter safe-mode. The difference is that safe-mode is using minimal drivers. So, I agree with Zoron.

In fact, it's hard to imagine what else it could be other than a device driver problem.

Check out Device Manager and the system log to see if there are any clues as to which device/driver is having trouble.

Device Manager is at... control panel/system/hardware tab.
System Log is at... control panel/administrative tools/event viewer/system.

Thanks for the tips, I have found something peculiar. Even though after defrag windows boots up everytime now...

Anyway, peculiar thing is this: I have found a BUNCH of places in the event system viewer where it has a group of errors all in a row saying:

"An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation."

How do I find out what device that is? And is this really bad. I have an old WD external and I'm hopeing it is that device.

New problem!! When I remove my computer from power then turn it on, POST says my RAM frequency at the voltage is bad (I have to manually set to 800 MHz because that is what the RAM actually is). But if I go into BIOS as it asks and don't change anything, it works just peachy the next time around!!! HELP! :D

Are you using a SATA Seagate internal HDD?

No I'm using both of these:

For my OS and Games: Raptor

For storage: Storage

They are both SATA, OS is SATA 1 and Storage is SATA 2. Thanks for all the help!!!!

Yes that's definitely related to the startup hangs. Windows is doing a lot of error recovery, and so Windows appears to have hung-up.

I had to Google that (Event 51) message, and there is a lot of discussion about it in various forums. All I can say for sure is that it's a vague generic disk I/O error message... can result from a variety of different problems in the motherboard controller/cable/disk-drive part of the system. Consider yourself lucky if it has gone away permanently after the defrag.

If the problem reappears, I suggest you Google search on that message and get some ideas on what to do from the many other people who have stuggled with Event 51/sluggish disk performance problems.

Concerning the memory problem, I'm not very knowledgeable in that area. If it continues to be a problem for you, post a question about it in the hardware forum.

this is strange i was going to post this question :)
so i have exactly the same problem, but none of the answers above helped
my computer however isn't that good :roll:
sempron 3000+
512 crappy ram
some gigabyte mobo
geforce 6600gt
xp pro
(thank god this isn't my gaming computer :P )
anyone has some other ideas???
