The nearly universal attitude on the boards (and elsewhere) for the past month (or more) has been to wait for the price cuts then buy an Intel-based system. I'm guessing this has created some artificially large, pent-up demand. Do you think this will lead to shortages? How acute and for how long? What about price gouging by retailers and possibly distributors?
Supply and demand... If there is more demand for a product than supply then the price will go up.
Gouging? It's only gouging if you're taking advantage of an unfair situation. Since Newegg, ZZF, and who ever are in competition against one-another, the market will set the price.
I doubt it'd lead to significant shortages. Those of us who know would wait, for sure, but the big important resellers- Dell, HP, etc- won't, and they move a lot more chips than home builders.
One need only look at Newegg and this weeks AMD X2 6000+ price drop. They lowered the prices and got hit so hard, they changed their listing to out of stock and then to $599. After a day or two, they dropped the price again to $239 (and, of course, in stock). Unless you absolutely have to purchase it the day it drops in price, there's no harm in waiting a couple more days for things to stabilize.

who in they right mind would buy an AMD cpu? Its not a Gaming CPU company...according to this forum
I would simply point you to the more knowledgible graphics card people who will certainly slam that idea down. Its true the best performance can be had by c2d, but not much truly, unless your gaming at very lot rez. You know this, most do,but beyond gaming the c2d does rule, much more than what you see in gaming. Im no fanboy and Im looking with great interest in the Barcelona, but currently, aside from gaming, the c2d rules
you can pick up an e6420 today for $215 (including shipping) and thats from a reliable site that has ~1250 in stock at their california based DC. they have been flying off the shelves there, so i see no reason why they would lower the price on 4/22.

Hmmmm, perhaps someone like myself who doesn't need a computer to play a video game and doesn't need to overclock a system so he can open MS Word .00001 seconds faster.
